My 4 1/2 year old son got this for Christmas, 2008. He loved the idea of getting a clock, but it was not his most exciting toy that morning. It wasn't until days later when we discovered all the cool things it does that he really got into it. What really got him hooked were two things (one with some teaching value, and one without). This clock will say the actual time outloud when you push a button, which is actually helping my son develop a sense of time of day. And,'Chirpy' the little bird who inhabits the clock, requires a certain amount of maintenance (like feeding, bathing, taking him on walks, etc.). My son thinks this is a sort-of video game, like his cousins have, and finds this cool (mind, this is the closest thing he has to a video game, so more experienced gaming kids may or may not find this equally compelling).
The clock will also tell you what time the hands of the clock are saying. It has two alarms you can set, which my son responds to better than when mom tells him it is time to do something. You can program birthdays for family members in, too, and Chirpy will say 'happy birthday to dad/mom/sister/grandma/grandpa/you' at specific times on the set date.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much staying power this clock has. I attribute this to the fact that it has enough different functions, like birthdays, alarms, etc. to keep bringing itself back to his attention. The fact that it functions as an actual clock, in addition to a learning clock, is big, too.

This toy does too much. I just wanted a clock that would talk that I could use for teaching my son to tell time. But this one also has a built in video pet, who at times needs to be fed and the clock will start talking to ask for food for the pet. It has no off switch, so it can get annoying at times. I would like to be able to shut of the volume, but allow the digital clock to keep running.

My daughter suggested this as a gift from me to my grandson, age 4. It was his favourite present at Christmas and is still.
