Better than Norton,
By Diego Banducci (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fix It 5.0 (CD-ROM)
This program offers all of the features offered by Systemworks (anti-virus, disk defrag, windows maintenance, etc.), but has a Registry Fixer that catches registry errors that Systemworks misses (there are literally hundreds of them). It then lists them as green, yellow and red (depernding upon how critical they may be to your system) so that you can decide which to delete. It also offers a Registry Defrag feature (unavailable on Norton), to optimize registry performance. These two features alone justify the cost of the product. While it does offer anti-virus protection, it does not include a firewall, anti-spam or spyware blocking. For these features, the best program is PC-cillin Internet Security 2004.

Much, much better than ....,

This review is from: Fix It 5.0 (CD-ROM)
I switched from the leading utility when a) they started to charge for anti-virus signature updates, and 2) the auto-update stopped working with no fixes available. The latter was, of course, critically important, especially since my children were not able to download updates manually. (Of course, it has always been possible to get the latest anti-virus signatures without the fee if you knew the trick, but I really resented the extra fee. It began to feel like buying their software was paying to get the right to pay more, and more, and more... )The Fix-It utilities are much better. The defragmentation module is very fast, as is the disk integrity check. These are the most commonly run tasks. In addition the Powerdesk utility included (and also sold separately)has itself won several awards for being superior to the Windows Explorer. The dual pane window makes moving files much easier and the preview pane is enormously helpful when file name are not sufficiently descriptive. Highly recommended!

great product for novices,

I'm extremely happy with this product and intially bought it as a registry cleaner. I bought this product soon after I bought a new PC. My old PC got slower and slower overtime and I wanted to keep the new PC in tip-top shape. My kids do a lot of downloading and who knows what else. This product has a great registry cleaner for novices. I'm terrified at the thought of changing the computer registry but this software goes through the registry and rates each problem it finds: green light--ok to delete, yellow light--delete with caution, red light--extreme caution. I only change the green light entries which is the default. The first time I ran it, it deleted over 400 entries with no ill effects.
As an added bonus it came with PC-cillin, a very good anti-virus software program. This anti-virus software picked up a trojan on my computer which several other anti-virus software programs missed. PC-Cillin is made by Trend Micro. It also comes with a host of diagnostic tools, disk utilities, and system restore functions, registry defrag, system backup utilities. For the novice you can just use the 'all in one' wizard and it will run the utilities for you (only green light changes will be made). The 'all in one' wizard does take several hours to run however. I would buy this product again. (...) Also, VCOM responded quickly the one time I had a question on how to delete a trojan. This product does not deal with spyware. I still run Spybot, AD-aware, and Spyware Blaster to deal with spyware.

Fix-it Utilities,

First off,the registry clean-up does NOT quite deliver what is expected from it.It classifies the problem registry entries with green, yellow, and red colors and prompts you to be cautious about deleting yellow and red ones, but actually providing no information or whatsoever on how to go about removing those entries. You basically end up leaving those problems untouched.Secondly, XP/2000 doesnot require registry defragmantation by default. So it renders that feature useless. Most importantly,I don't know if it was Fix-it Wizards or the pagefile defragmenter.I got my CPU locked up at 100% so I had to restore my computer to the earlier saved restore point.Considering I purchased the laptop pretty recently and it was supposed to be a top-notch one the problem I experienced was not pleasing at all.

Better than that other suite,

I'm extreamly pleased with Fix-it Utilities. I once purchased norton system utilities and I returned it the next day, V-com fix-it utilities actually does what norton said it would. I think the regestry utilities included are great. The reg cleaner, defragger worked well, and didnt cause any system errors like other products I've tried. I haven't switched to the antivirus from the product I use now, but even without the antivirus this suite of utilities is a bargain.

This product suite has a number of software tools, some very good and at least one that is really bad. The Registry editor is supposed to be excellent. However, I purchased this Suite to try to 'clean' a virus infested PC. The Virus checker/remover is by a company called Trend Micro, and the version they include in this package is essentially useless. On running it, it provide a list of 19 viruses but was unable to eliminate any of them. I don't know why, as I was able to manually delete all but one in which access was denied by Windows. However, manual deletion of virus files must be accompanied by registry changes and I found little help for this at the Trend Micro site; most of the information seemed to be outdated or wrong for the viruses in question and some seemed to be misidentified. I later obtained a free product, Free-AV, that succeeded where this product failed utterly.

This is and excellent program but for money I would go for the systemsuite. It is the same with a lot more features, options and six trial programs for about the same price. I'm the proud owner of both programs and I highly recommend both.

I really don't have much use for utilities like this, but I had some computers I work on, that had pesty 'gliches'. I found this to be a useful program, as long as you don't trust it explicitly. Like all utilities, it's only good for so much, and then it can create all kind of problems for you. So for small problems, you'll love it. Also, buy the 5.0 version, and stay away from the 6.0 version. It's not as good.
