Partition Commander's three Wizards walk you through an automated process and offer suggestions for the best way to slice up your hard drive. Or you can venture on your own and manually manipulate partitions. The first wizard creates more drive space, moves unused space, searches for free space, and recovers wasted space. The second offers faster disk access by creating a partition for the Windows swap file. It took us about 20 minutes to create the recommended 20MB partition while the program restructured directories. The third wizard organizes the OS and its apps and data by separating them. Unfortunately, the wizard only lets you create up to two partitions for doing this.

We recommend manual partitioning. Partition Commander adequately guides you through resizing, deleting, formatting, moving, copying, validating, and optimizing partitions. Optimizing was the best. It determines the cluster size that works best for your data. We converted from 8K to 2K clusters, freeing up 17MB (taking only 5 minutes). Advanced features include hiding and converting partitions. We tried converting a FAT16 primary partition with an NT boot loader (NT 4.0 was installed on the second partition) to FAT32. Partition Commander properly displayed a message explaining it wasn't recommended (but didn't say why). Then we tried converting the second NT partition to FAT32, and no error message was displayed. Doing so would have hosed NT. Partitions can be converted between FAT16 and FAT32, and changes for everything can be undone via a multiple undo feature. Other utilities let you restore the Master Boot Record (MBR) and diagnose partitions.

Partition Commander comes on two floppies for DOS and Win95/98. For WinNT or OS/2, it must be run from DOS, meaning the primary partition must be a FAT file system. It supports drives larger than 8.4GB, and FAT12, FAT16 (FAT), VFAT, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, and various Unix file systems. Also included is System Commander Personal Edition, which differs from the Kick Ass full version in that it doesn't support booting multiple OSes from the primary partition, among other things. We most liked the Partition Commander's Optimize utility and the Advisor buttons that explained things in detail. But we recommend saving up and getting PartitionMagic instead. - Sean Cleveland

Partition Commander runs in DOS mode, which means you don't have to reboot after making changes. This method is too simplistic and not recommended for those running Windows NT.

From the Manufacturer

Partition Commander, equipped with PARTITION WIZARD, automates most partitioning tasks, simplifying the chore of partitioning with comparable products such as Partition Magic & Partition IT. With Partition Commander you can reclaim wasted disk space, organize files, add new operating systems, even speed up drive access in many cases, and you don't have to be an expert because Partition Commander's exclusive Partition Wizard automates the process, guiding you through step by step. Or simply bypass the Wizard if you desire and do your partitioning manually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from V-Communications, February 5, 2000
This review is from: Partition Commander 1.0 (CD-ROM)
I teach computer information systems for a living and I tell my students you can not partition a drive with data on it. I am also highly skeptical about any product that makes the claim that you can. V-Communications has changed all that with Partition Commander.

Partition Commander is easy to install, although I highly recommend that you back up you drive first. Also included is the undo feature, which resets your drive in the event you no longer desire Partition Commander installed.

There's a host of feature with this product, from working with drive larger than 8.4GB to working with any OS, I tested this with Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT and there were no errors or problems during the install, the undo feature worked great as well.

Also Partition Commander will reclaim unused disk space, which is always a plus. The cost is minimal and the users manual is very helpful. Overall V-Communications has made the technically complex very easy for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mutli-System worries are finally over!, February 5, 2000
This review is from: Partition Commander 1.0 (CD-ROM)
You work for a company with DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 version A, 95 OSR2, 98 1st and 2nd editions, Windows NT, Linux, OS/2 Warp installed on many pcs, you can't afford to buy several pcs to keep up, what do you do to solve this problem?

Well if you like me, you grab a copy of Deluxe System Command install it on one pc and have all those operating systems in one location. V-Communications is the expert when it comes to multiple operating system applications and Deluxe System Commander is the perfect example.

The application allows for multiple OS-es in one partition, over 100 different operating systems, universal mouse support, password security, file management and so much more. For the price and the convenience you have an unbeatable combination.

Couple all that with another of V-Communications products, Partition Commander, and you'll be the talk of the IS department. I found this product to safe and easy to install and use. As a computer instructor, this is one product that will certainly come in handy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very, VERY S-L-O-W, November 27, 2000

"nh1985" (Richmond, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Partition Commander 1.0 (CD-ROM)
This is by far the slowest partitioning program you could buy. I only have a 2 gigabyte hard drive and I divided it up into two parts and that took almost 2 hours. Anything that you tell it to do, it takes an extraordinary amount of time. I finally got tired of it and bought Partition Magic that takes only 30 minutes to do the same thing Partition Commander did. My Recommendation is to leave this program on the shelve and get Partition Magic that does the job in a reasonable amount of time.
