King Cole Trio's contribution to the boys overseas, December 27, 2006
This review is from: V-Disc: A Musical Contribution By America's Best for our armed forces overseas: King Cole Trio (Audio CD)
The personnel of the King Cole Trio changed a few times before Nat abandoned it permanently in 1949. For these V DISC transcriptions, the group consisted of Nat on piano, Oscar Moore playing guitar, with Johnny Miller manning the bass. Sound quality varies from acceptable to excellent. A touch of filtering may have helped some tracks.
Liner notes to V DISC * KING COLE TRIO claim that the trio recorded 15 songs for V DISC-- thus, at least two sides here are from elsewhere. "Nat Meets June" for one, features several jazz musicians and vocalist June Christy, who was working in those days with Stan Kenton and arranger Pete Rugolo (Nat's future producer).
This is a solid set of King Cole standards, and includes several of his big early hits.
