Great talent, great artifact.,

These (circa WWII) live recordings, though somewhat lo-fi,(more like 'medium-fi') show that the Andrews Sisters weren't just great in studio, they could 'kick it' live as well. Not a single bum note, great backup bands as well.

What makes this V-Disc CD so special is the performances are killer. For example, a couple songs like "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" and "The Three Caballeros" which normally feature Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters (on Decca), feature only the sisters here. Patty Andrews simply takes Bing's vocal parts and gives it that "hot-honey-baby-fox" treatment. Trust me, you won't miss Bing.Other hit songs like "The Blond Sailor" or ""Victory Polka" which I normally don't care for, come off very well here. It's probably the case of playing these songs live for months and then laying down "superior" versions for this V-Disc project. You also get classics like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" or "Straighten Up And Fly Right" which more than hold there own next to the original Decca classics. The one down side to this CD is the sound quality, it isn't great, but it's good enough. Check out the samples. |
