Editorial Reviews

If the name Kenny Vaughan doesn't ring a bell, don't be surprised, but you've probably listened to him a million times. Kenny is one of Nashville's most sought after sessions men wielding a guitar. A technical virtuoso in many genres of music, he has played with all the best since the 1980s! Now you can check him out on his own solo album!

This album certainly isn't all rock and roll, though there are hints. It isn't all country, though there some more hints. What this album is--is all GREAT! Kenny Vaughn may be the best guitar player in Nashville, but it turns out he can also sing some too. This is one of the best first albums I have heard in many a moon. Do yourself, and your ears, a favor and buy this CD! You will be glad you did!!

Kenny Vaughan
"V"
(Sugar Hill, 2011)
-----------------------------------------------
A fun record shining the spotlight on a guy who's usually standing in the background. Country music superpicker Kenny Vaughan is a heavy-hitter in the new Nashville studio scene, with a regular gig as the lead guitar in Marty Stuart's band, (following several years with Lucinda Williams) and countless recording sessions under his belt, backing artists such as Rodney Crowell, Patty Loveless and the Sweethearts Of The Rodeo. His rootsy side is on full display in this excellent solo album, with tips of the hat towards Buck Owens next to slinky instrumentals like "Mysterium," which recalls his early work with Bill Frisell. Mostly, it's a fun, twangy, retro vibe that fills this disc -- like Stuart, Vaughan has a flair for uncomplicated, old-school hillbilly twang, and while that might not get him on the charts, it will keep him on my home stereo... Definitely worth a spin! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

This CD is a MUST for anyone who likes "genuine" and "real" country music. The songs and of course the pickers on this CD symbolize "the epitome of Hillbilly Twang" and is heavily flavored with the things that made Nashville famous!! Now add in the fact that the pickers also add to the quality & uniqueness of the music. Kenny Vaughn is guitar player for Marty Stuart, and this CD has not only Kenny, but also Marty Stuart, Paul Martin, and Harry Stinson, collectively known as Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. Add in some spice from outstanding Nashville pickers Chris Scruggs, Charles Treadway and Jeffey Clemens, and some great vocals by the legendary Oak Ridge Boys, and you have the complete recipe for an awesome musical treat! Just go on & buy it....you can't go wrong on this project!

Kenny is my favorite guitar player named "Vaughan" -- maybe my favorite player period (for sure in the Country genre). I've seen him several times live with Marty Stuart. "The Fabulous Superlatives" are truly an appropriate name for Kenny, Paul, and Harry -- and there's no one else like Marty. The "V" album is FUN, beginning to end. The guests are welcome additions -- the Oak Ridge Boys make "Okolona, TN" even more fun and Chris Scruggs tears up the lap steel on "Hot Like That". I love Kenny as a Superlative and hope he remains one, but I'm happy that he put this gem out under his own name.

Kenny Vaughan's an A-list guitar-picker, and though he's made a living playing on some of Nashville's mainstream product, his bona fides come from backing the cream of Americana acts, including Lucinda Williams, Jim Lauderdale, Rodney Crowell and Marty Stuart. He's been a member of Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives for a decade, playing Don to Stuart's Buck, and the group backs him on this first solo album. The Buckaroos comparison comes to the fore in the tight harmony singing of "Stay Outta My Dreams," and though Vaughan sings "Country Music Got a Hold on Me," country music isn't the whole show. Vaughan's guitar twangs low and mysterious for the instrumental spy soul of "Mysterium" and closes the album with the rockabilly gospel on "Don't Leave Home Without Jesus." His playing is impeccable throughout, kicking up echoes of Roy Nichols and picking lines that suggest Clarence White, but maintaining his own style and tone all the while. His vocals aren't as polished as his strings, but he's an enthusiastic singer and a canny songwriter who lays down convivial songs grounded in killer guitar and country-rock hooks worthy of NRBQ. Great album if you like twang. One of the best pickers in Nashville lays it down for you on this solo album.

I have followed the music of Marty Stuart since he was 14 years old. When the Fabulous Superlatives were formed, I began to tune into Kenny Vahghan's work. He is definitely not the "how many notes you can twang in a nano-second" kind of guy... although he does a respectable job at that too. He is, without a doubt, the source of the cleanest guitar sound just about anywhere; highlighted by his work with the Superlatives. This solo album really shows who he is via his GREAT choice of songs & lyrics; especially "Country Music Got a Hold on Me" and "Okolona Tennessee". Great backup by the Superlatives & the steel work of Chris Scruggs, too. Best musical $$ you can ever spend... Kenny's debut CD is a real gem! Footnote: Don't miss seeing these guys in person if you EVER get the chance.

Too bad this one only has ten tracks because Kenny Vaughan really knows how to get the job done. Great choice of songs, outstanding picking, cool and smokin' hot at the same time.

We've seen Marty and the boys twice in the last couple years and have been sitting on tickets since August for the show coming up on April 21st.

Don't miss a chance to see them if you have any idea whats good for you.
