My wife owns the gunmetal black high end v-moda earbuds and to tell the truth, those have NOTHING on these as far as sound (except for looking cooler and costing twice as much). Yes, they may be a little more durable (and heavy) due to material (metal vs plastic), but as far as sound goes, you will NOT be disappointed with these. Now having said that, you must experiment with the various ear inserts so that you get the one that fits "just right". But when you find that, you will be amazed at the sound of these. They are also extremely comfortable.

I've gone through tons of earbuds of different brands at different price ranges. I really like V-Moda: 1. The medium size silcone buds fit in my ear perfectly. They are soft and confortable (better than Sony's). So, they can stay in my ears for a long time. 2. The price, I think, is really good. It seems like most of the decent (but not ridiculously overpriced)earbuds are now priced around 100 USD--like Bose Triport in-ear, SONY MDR-EX90LP,V-Moda Vibe 3. Bass Freqs are also surprisingly really loud (not just because the fit into my ears and block the ambient sound out). Even at high volumes, I am surprised that bass, mids and highs of (128 kbps MP3 files) remain undistorted. My complaint is that the bass is not well balanced for all kinds of music. I feel the bass is too loud and somewhat overpowers the mids. The highs aren't as crisp as I would have liked. That said, considering for the price that I paid for these, I am not sure if there are anything out there in the same price range that are significantly better than the Bass Freqs. I'd like to try the VModa Vibes but they cost twice as much. I'm very happy with the Bass Freqs.

I bought a Sansa E-250 (reviewed elsewhere) which I really like. I thought the sound was good but I didn't care much for the earbuds. They were quite uncomfortable after wearing them awhile.
I began shopping around for replacements, but shopping online is difficult because you can't test the sound or the comfort. So, I relied on the good reviewers here at Amazon. My search led me to these V-MODA Bass Freq earbuds. I chose the black. The only negative to these earbuds is the difficulty in getting them out of the packaging. Once that was done, I plugged them into the E-250 and gave them a try. You really need to experiment with all the earpieces. I started with the small but they were too loose to give good sound and they fell out. Like Goldilocks, I kept trying the different sizes, until I found the best fit. Once you find the best fit, you will also experience the best sound. I was extremely pleased with the sound of these earbuds. They are far better than the ones that came with the Sansa and WAY more comfortable. I have not touched the equalizer yet, because I'm pleased with the sound, but I'll probably experiment with it to see if I can improve the sound even more. These earbuds are a great bang for the buck. They sound great and are comfortable in the ears. It's a totally new listening experience.

Wish I Had of Read the Reviews First,

Since my ear canals are small, the earphones that came with my new iRiver Clix did not fit at all. So for the first time, I really went looking for a new pair of earphones. I was also looking to get the most out of my Clix. I went onto Cnet reviews and read about the Shure's, the Etymotic's, and the Sennheiser's. The Sennheiser CX300-B was the only one in my price range. Forget them. The Sennheiser's were too bassy for me; they drown out the treble. I eventually lucked on the reviews for the V-Moda's. They were rated excellent by Cnet, and I concur. The V-Moda's are better and cheaper than the Sennheiser's. The bass thump's, but does not drown out the middle and high ranges. If you only have about $40-$50 bucks to spend, spend it on the V-Moda Bass Frequency Earphones, even if you are a music purist. You can always adjust the bass, if your player has a graphic equalizer.

the great midrange massacre,

Bought these because of the CNET review..teaches me to trust an internet magazine with audio reviews.
Anyway, unless you are 16 years old, or addicted to overpowering bass, you won't like these. They sound like the subs in my car when I was 16- overpowered, cheap, and muddy. Or like the bass boost function on a $30 boom-box from GPX. Sorry, no thanks. To be fair, some kinds of music DO sound good in these...specifically house/electro and hip-hop, but pretty much all rock from hardcore to acoustic sounds like the frequency range dips out at 8k. On the plus side...they are really good at blocking outside noise...I couldnt hear anything with them in. They're comfortable as well.

Given the price these are great earbuds. Definitely lots of bass, yet lower midrange is not muddy. If you get them in right, the trebble is there, clean and detailed, however the emphasized bass may have you reaching for the EQ occasionally. I was pleasantly surprised by the even emphasis, runs from low B to high G sound great. Even with the bass emphasis, I was impressed with the amount of inner detail. Jamerson's rythm fingering on old Motown tracks (converted from LPs and 45s to MP3) is clearly evident (try the "unsanitized" original mono 45 of Love Is Here And Now You're Gone by the Supremes). On Take It Away by Wings the bass line always seemed to muddy up when the full mix came in but with these little buds you can follow it all the way through. Admittedly these examples are originally analog. On the latest digital stuff subjected to all the time domain trickery modern recording techniques provide (sub sonic hyping to see the woofers flail) the bass may be uncomfortably loud at levels that allow you to perceive "normal" trebble. On Sunday Morning (studio mix) by Maroon 5, the electric bass was OK but the hyped kick drum was over the top. But, since these buds are responsive to equalization, and given they deliver LOTS of bass as claimed, they're a steal at the price. They're supplied with three sets of silicon rings to fit different size ear canals. Mine fit well using the small rings, and are very comfortable. I was also impressed with the balance and imaging -- stuff in the middle is right there between your eyes, and the stereo sound stage provide excellent localization. On well recorded studio tracks (I'm listening to Cry On My Shoulder by Bonnie Raitt as I write) all the little percussion details are not only clearly audible but also clearly localizable. These may not be your only set of cans -- becuase of the bass emphasis they "color" everything. But -- once you buy 'em, you 'll be surprised at how often you reach for them.

Apparently loss of sound from one earbud is a pretty common finding,
This review is from: V-MODA Bass Freq In-Ear Stereo Headphone (Bling Bling Black) (Electronics)
When I first bought these in October 2006, one earbud plastic broke while I tried to pull it out of the package. Luckily the Tekserve folks allowed me to exchange it; apparently it happened so often V-Moda should call it a package design defect. Also, the silicon plugs keep getting pulled off so I keep losing them. My left earbud finally stopped working after 14 months of use, and I used them only once a week. Also, the bass is clear but the mids and highs are muted. I use my iPod to lower the bass just so I can hear the vocals. This is a bad product for its frequency range and durability.

I purchased this on Jan.18th 2007 after many debatable and personal hesitance. You know how it is when you read these customer reviews, some look for the negatives on the product. Then when you see a positive review sometimes you get that thought "yes!" Well, I am one of those shoppers. Getting back to these earbuds: When these "V-MODA Bass Freq Earbuds - Bling Bling Black" earbuds showed up I was excited. I immediately and carefully unpacked these buds. The packaging was very good. The buds were packed not just in styrophome peanuts but the manufacturer packaging as well.
I inspected them carefully and I immediately noticed how small they were. That long stem you see is 3/4" long & 1/8 in diameter. The cord from the bottom of that stem to the end of the plug is 46 1/2" long (or 3'10 1/2" long). The outer shell is constructed with plastic. Included were 3 sizes (S.M.L) of rubber fittings. I use the mediums. The plug itself is 1/8" gold-plated. I plugged these "V-MODA Bass Freq Earbuds - Bling Bling Black" into my 1gigabyte sandisk m240. My first impression was a mixture of awe and disappointment. "YUCK! Where in the heck is the bass that these are supposed to produce!?" So I made some adjustments with the equalizer and they sounded a little better but...the sound wasn't as I expected. I went back to the internet to do MORE research. If any of you are educated on sound quality you have to take into consideration of the source that is powering the drivers (or speakers) so I thought it was my MP3 player. I stumbled onto a review and read from a customer that sometimes speakers need to be "burned-in". I am well aware of that term as I am an advanced computer gamer/geek. For those that don't know here's what that means; the burn in process is to leave them on at a moderately high level for a period of time. This technique will break in the drivers, after the burn-in, sound quality increases dramatically. There is a significant increase in the sharpness of the treble (I believe the frequency response goes up), and the spacialization was noticeably enhanced. The bass (or lower end) is also deepened. Though this is a highly debatable subject I am merely giving you an option to consider before you make a final impression. Please make your own opinion on this subject. Some report the speakers sound great out of the box and they did not hear significant differences over time. Others found harshness and restricted bottom end to be very distinct or improved (Depending upon how much you use the speakers in question) Alternatively, you can leave your MP3 player run unattended for the life of a battery. (If applicable). This is something you may want to consider or try. I found doing this made a huge difference. Getting these earbuds fitted properly takes time. Adjustments are a must to get the most out of these earbuds. Experiment with them, use all of the rubber fittings and move them around in your ear. When you get the right sound to your liking try to keep and remember where you place them. Now this is where I find an issue. I use my MP3 player when I walk. I don't jog so I can imagine the frustration of keeping these buds in place. Yes, these buds do lose that position as I explained above. I have to keep adjusting them around depending upon my physical movements. The cord was also an issue with me. In my opinion it is a bit delicate at the plug and at the stem. What I did was wrap some black electrical tape around the wire at the base of the plug to give it some support for that 'just-in-case'. I recommend that you take some precautions and use these buds with care as you should with any earbuds. My final thought: I give these earbuds a 4 star rating because of the cord and the construction but these earbuds are awesome! The sound that these buds produce is very close to what they claim what they can do. A problem of how well these stay in place is a issue with me and may be with you as well. I don't jog so I will assume that this may be a HUGE problem for those that do. If you have the extra cash get the "V-MODA Vibe Earbuds - Gunmetal Black style". These may be sturdier. I tested the ones I purchased with various music styles and I am very pleased. I wanted to hear how much bass these buds can produce so I played some rap music. WOW! There is a definite `thump' that these buds have. I recommend that when you play MP3 format to use a high bit rate of 320kpbs. I cannot comment on the other formats and/or bitrate as I don't use them. Listening to FM radio with these buds is also a very enjoyable experience. The sound is amazing! For the money I spent on these, I feel it is well worth it. Give them some time before you make your final impression (A month like I did). Good luck and I hope you find these enjoyable as I do.

It only took a month for this piece of junk to stop working, sound only comes out of one side now. Sound quality and fit were good, but what does it matter if they don't work?

For my iPod, I used the apple earbuds for a while. I probably put them through all hell and they still worked great. I just found them to be uncomfortable. I got these V-Moda's to replace them. They sounded great, but are exceedingly fragile. They broke within a week. I am a typical college student, so I always just put my computer, iPod, whatever else in my bookbag. The apple earbuds lasted and held up well, these didn't. The plastic is incredibly thin and the earphones cracked for no apparent reason. I am extremely disapointed and am sending them back.
