5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Monitor!!!, July 1, 2011
This review is from: ASUS VG236H 23-Inch 120 Hz 3D Ready Panel Monitor with nVidia 3D Vision Kit - Black (Personal Computers)
If you are still unsure about which 3D monitor to get or just looking for info about it, I hope this helps.

First things first, if you were like me and had a basic 19" lcd monitor then you thought things looked ok. The very moment I powered the monitor on I was blown away by how the clear the image was. It was so vibrant and the 120Hz refresh rate made things look so smooth. An example would be when you move your mouse around the screen it kind of jumps from one spot to the next which normally you don't notice or think about. Once you start using 120Hz, you can hardly see the courser skip a beat. it was like owning a Mac, but not having to give up a kidney for it.

At first I was a little worried that resolution of 1920x1080 on a 23" screen would make everything too small because I experience this with my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop which is 1920x1200 with a 15.6" screen but since I have good eyes, I am able to read it with almost no problem. I was very surprised to see that the resolution balanced out nicely, providing both lots of work area while being able to read everything without straining the eyes. If you are like me and have many windows open at once and need lots of work area, you would have no problem.

Now the 3D is probably the only thing I feel needs more work. Like others have said "you expect things to really jump out at you" but that just is not quite the case. Don't get me wrong, the 3D is still very nice and does jump out more then say the anaglyph glasses (red/blue) but it just was not what I had hoped. I have a feeling it has soemthing to do with screen size. If you had a 50" 3D tv then I bet it would really jump out at you. I have noticed though that the farther you get from the screen the more 3D it looks but you cant get to far or the glasses drop out of range of the transmitter, plus a the screen gets smaller as you walk away which is not that great when watching a movie. Note though that you are able to adjust the depth of the 3D, however the higher you go, the harder it gets to focus on it and you can see a little bit of a ghost image from the separation of the images an your eyes not able to go that far. It's not that bad but it can be very noticeable at times and you really have to get used to the 3D before you use the higher depths otherwise you will strain your eyes and get a headache.

I have tried both playing games and watching 3D Blu-Ray movies on it and for the most part they look great and there were even times when the 3D was almost too real. A good example would be during the movie "Despicable Me" and there is a roller coaster scene where you are in the aspect of the rider. It actually made me feel sick but I do have a little vertigo so that might be why. So while the 3D does not pop out at you, it does provide depth and a feel of the surroundings. This is also what makes it good for games. Now keep in mind that not every game works right with 3D monitors. The Nvidia software has preloaded info about the games you play and tells you how well the 3D works and what is needed to make it appear better just for that game. I have played with it using multiple games now and I have to say it can make things way more fun. An example was when I was playing "Left for Dead 2" with my friends. It was very creepy to be running around shooting zombies in 3D and sometimes when they would die, the blood would fly into your face and slide down the screen which felt like it was in my face. In some cases, it does kind of feels like things can jumps out at you and there were even times I involuntarily flinched thinking something was coming at me. It does take some getting used to

The construction of the monitor is very sturdy and has a sleek design. It has the ability to move up and down with ease or it can be wall mounted. However it does lack the ability to rotate or twist sideways. not sure how that would work with 3D and what you would need it for. The base also has a good design being heavy and solid but with a flat surface allowing space in front of the monitor which gives you room to place the Nvidia emitter there. It does lack a cable management system which would have been nice but it's not very crucial.

Now there are only few cons about this Monitor bundle. The Nvidia glasses are able to make the image appear 3D because the LCD screens in the glasses blink on/off super fast which is synced to the monitors refresh rate. You cant really see it happening but what you do notice is that everything looks tinted. This tint makes things a little darker than normal so you kind of loose the vibrant feel of the Asus screen. You can always up the brightness on what ever game or movie you are using but it really only make the image easier to see. The vibrant colors unfortunately can't be adjusted to look better with the glasses on. Also while in the 3D mode you cant adjust any of the color/brightness settings on the monitor or use the Asus "Splendid" feature which would be nice.

Secondly the 3D feature ONLY can be used with the Dual Link DVI cable that is included. Most DVI cables you see are Single Link cables so you can't just use any old cable. Luckily since it does come with a fairly long one in the box, you should not have a problem unless you need the monitor far from the computer.(I think the cable only ten feet long.) Sadly you cant use HDMI for the 3D feature so you kind of loose out on a little quality. (Although I seriously doubt that anyone can actually see the difference between DVI and HDMI.) This is not a real big deal because the only obvious benefits to HDMI would be that HDMI is fast and easy to hook up plus the audio is passed along an HDMI cable helping to condense cable clutter. DVI cables only pass the video, but since the Asus monitor does not have built-in speakers, it really does not matter. Also keep in mind that the 3D feature on this monitor and all other 3D monitors (that I'm aware of) will NOT work with PS3's Stand alone 3D Blu-Ray Players and so on. It will only work with a computer and the Nvidia 3D vision Kit! I really wish it did but the technologies are too different.

That brings me to my third problem with it. A monitor like this really should come with built in speakers. Not just some dinky speakers no bigger than laptop speakers, but something that has a little depth in them. What is the point of having HDMI if its not using all the features HDMI has. Say I wanted to hook a Blu-Ray player but keep my computer on the DVI, I have to hook the player up using HDMI but I unfortunately can't hear anything from the player because it has no speakers. It would require me to have a sound system wired up to hear the player. Don't get me wrong, I prefer my surround system but the option would be nice.

The last two problems I have are more for the Nvidia 3D vision kit. I noticed that since the glasses use a high speed flashing LCD, if you have any lights or florescent bulbs in the area, It makes it hard to see your screen. I have a switch panel under the monitor and the lights flicker real bad when I use the glasses. I need to cover them up if I want to watch a movie or play a game plis I also need to have the lights off because it harder to see with them on.

Secondly I found the emitter interferes with IR devices. I use a remote for my surround receiver and when the glasses are running, the remote does not work. The emitter uses IR transmitters to talk to the glasses and based on how I have seen the emitter work, it basically floods the area in a 360 degree pattern so any set of glasses in range can work. This makes sense since you can have as many people you want using glasses and they could be sitting at any angle. Because it does this, any type of unit that uses IR in range of the emitter will not function. Its a little irritating but I have managed to arrange it so there is something blocking the side of the emitter that faces the stereo receiver.

So overall its a fantastic monitor but many say the price of the monitor is just too much. If you think about it, it really is well worth it. Since this is a kit, you get the Nvidia 3D vision Glasses and emitter included in the monitor box. If you were to buy them separate, it would be around $130~$150. Basically, the cost of the monitor is only $350 which if you look around for 23" 3D monitors, they are the same price if not more. Unfortunately though, it does only come with a single pair of glasses so if you need more, you have to buy them separate for $100 which I think is WAY to much money. You might as well shell out an extra $30 and get a spare emitter as a backup or to use on another system. This clearly is not the fault of the monitor, just a little gripe of mine. :)

I know this was very long winded but I hope it helped some people decide if they want to get this monitor or not. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very cool, yet completely unneeded gadget., August 2, 2010

This review is from: ASUS VG236H 23-Inch 120 Hz 3D Ready Panel Monitor with nVidia 3D Vision Kit - Black (Personal Computers)
I bought this to reward myself for getting a scholarship, (which is rather counter-intuitive, but hey you need to celebrate.) and I was pleasantly surprised. This was not before swearing at the computer for about 30 minutes trying to install all the drivers the right way, but once it worked, the 3d effects were quite amazing.

I was disappointed to find that nothing really jumped OUT at you, but instead it felt like the monitor was a window to a smaller world. Nevertheless, it was very impressive. It didn't put as much of a press on my computer as all the reviews said it would, I was still getting very acceptable framerates playing rather demanding games using a GTX 275.

The glasses are pretty cool looking, and as a small bonus, they come charged enough to work out of the box. The monitor is really fantastic too, beautiful 1080p resolution, bright colors, and you can adjust it a lot of different ways for the best angle.

I originally got this for the games, and I was really shocked at how well all of them worked, I've yet to reach a game that doesn't support it.

My beef with this is the price. I would have waited if I wasn't so impulsive. The price was just a bit too high for what you get. It's cool and everything, but you are definitely paying a premium for new technology. It is cool enough that I'm keeping it though - I'm not regretting it THAT much.

And since this is a new technology, the amount of media for this is pretty small for everything but the games. There are a couple picture sets on nvidia website, but aside from that, you are pretty much stuck playing games for the 3d effect.

tl;dr: If you have the money, and PLAY GAMES, I'd recommend this. Otherwise, wait it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great screen but did not get the 3d Vision kit., October 6, 2010
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ASUS VG236H 23-Inch 120 Hz 3D Ready Panel Monitor with nVidia 3D Vision Kit - Black (Personal Computers)
I got this monitor as a reward to myself for successfully completing my move to San Diego and transferring to UCSD.

I have been using two Dell monitors for almost 3 years now and when I compare this monitor to the both of them I cannot believe how much better everything looks. Even without changing any settings on the monitor, the picture is much clearer and more vibrant compared to my old monitors.

My favorite part of the monitor is the 3 connectors it comes with. There is a connector for HDMI, DVI and Y,Pb,Pr. This is great because I can connect my PS3, Wii, and PC without switching around the wires.

There was one problem in my order though but it has to do with Amazon's service. I think that when Amazon got their shipment of monitors in, they got the ASUS VG236HE and not the VG236H. This is a problem because the VG235HE is the monitor without the 3D Vision Kit and it is what was sent to me. At first I thought the person packing the monitor just grabbed the wrong package because I could not tell I got the wrong item until I opened the box myself. So I asked them to just send me the nVidia GeForce Wireless 3D Stereo Glasses Kit with Emitter that they sold to save on the shipping cost for them and the trouble of me shipping back the monitor. The operator said they could not do that and she sent another monitor with one-day shipping, but since I got the first monitor on a Saturday, it was not until Tuesday that I got the replacement. It turned out that the replacement was also the model without the 3D Vision Kit.

This long winded rant basically means to be careful if you order this from Amazon because they might send you the wrong item. I ended up returning both of the screens and getting the monitor from newegg. This cost me more because of sales tax and recycling tax however.
