This desktop is powered by the 2.5 GHz Intel Pentium E5200 dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. Five high-speed USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire/i.LINK port are conveniently located on the back and sides for easy access and let you attach virtually all your peripherals without having to buy additional hardware. Other features include a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), Draft-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Gigabit Ethernet networking, S/PDIF digital audio output, Intel GMA X4500HD graphics (with 1750 MB of total available video memory), and integrated 3-watt stereo speakers (for 6 watts of total power. It comes preinstalled with the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1).

The Basics

• Processor: The 2.5 GHz Intel Pentium E5200 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC’s capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache (for a 2 MB total), and they have an 800 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

• Hard Drive: The ginormous 500 GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

• Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook,. It also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

The 20.1-inch LCD panel has an amazing 1680 x 1050-pixel resolution. And thanks to Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology, the flat-panel screen will deliver dazzling colors and sharp images whether displaying a DVD movie, television show, or web content. It delivers deep blacks and bright whites, true-to-life color, and razor-sharp detail. And with a glare filter and anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection, you'll experience a beautifully clear image.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500, which uses shared video memory (up to 1750 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

This desktop also has an integrated Intel High Definition Audio card with Dolby Digital Live, which provides real-time encoding technology that converts any audio signal into a Dolby Digital bitstream for transport and playback through a home theater system. I brought the JS160 (Silver) home yesterday and am so far very pleased with the purchase.

I wanted an all-in-one PC to replace our aged family computer, while at the same time reducing the clutter of the old system. I chose the Vaio over the 20" iMac because it seemed to me you get more computer for the money: a 500 GB HD, 4 GB RAM, and a Blu-ray drive.

The JS160 is extremely easy to set up, and the design is elegant. The angled foot in the back of the monitor has just enough tension in it to
provide continuously adjustable tilt of the screen by simply moving it to the desired position-- a very nice design. This is an attractive PC.

I find this machine to be extremely responsive running under Vista, and the 20.1" glossy display is a joy to look at. I also like the plentiful I/O ports that are conveniently positioned on the left side of the display.(Including SD and Sony memory stick slots.)

Even though I got the machine up and running within minutes, I did spend some time removing unwanted software, which I understand is pretty typical for Sony products.

I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a space-saving family PC that looks great and performs well.

I purchased the black version about 2 weeks before Christmas $1199 and a week later I found the the original silver color was on sale for $1129. I plead with Amazon for a price adjustment, but they would not budge. Two days later I stopped by my local Best Buy and found out the silver one was on sale for $999($1081 including tax). I know it was my fault and only wish I would of waited a week before making the purchase.

Overall I love the computer and setup was a breeze. I love the Blu Ray and bluetooth capabilities. I hooked it up to a Sony Bluetooth mouse and it works great. I was also able to listen to my music or audio through my Sony receiver wirelessly(bluetooth) through a option on the Sony receiver called DIMPORT. There are a few items that I wish Sony would of included with the computer, like a bigger screen, HDMI hookups and a TV tuner. But then again their more expensive line has all that.

We purchased this at Best Buy at Christmas for $999.00. It was a good bargain. I gave this one less star than perfect for the following reasons. First, it does not come with a copy of the operating system on a set of DVD's - you have to create these yourself. That's common for all the SONY VAIO products, but it is annoying. Second, (this is more of a Vista problem), it doesn't seem to want to recognize a cable network connection. The dialog box almost insists you use wireless....life was much more straight forward with Windows XP. Third, we noticed that USB connected external hard drive will sometimes be the culprit in the entire system freezing up and then we have to reboot. Nothing is "broken" and this only happens every now and then. Sure, one can blame the HD Drive, but then again this same external drive worked flawlessly with our previous XP Windows based machine.

Finally, like most desktops sold, it comes with a lot of craplets (software you don't need and designed for promotion.) What gets me is the self-made industry created through craplets. Instead of Best Buy recognizing this as an annoyance to the customer, they try to act like heroes and sell you a $29 service to clean it up. You know, they are large enough to tell vendors don't add this stuff. Second, Best Buy will annoy you with their long term service contract and paint a picture of doom and despair....for crying out loud, why would I buy a machine from someone if they're telling me up front that it probably won't work? (duh)

Let me emphasize what works well, though. For a home computer, it has wonderful performance. We take advantage of Hulu, [...] and Amazon downloads quite a bit and this machine provides flawless presentation. The built in web-cam is very adequate when using either Skype or Google's Video chat and the sound quality is reasonably good. It runs just fine, I even do some light development on it using MS's C# Visual Express and it is quite responsive.

Overall, it was a good buy for the money. Like anything else, you will always find a quirk or an annoyance....my complaints are just that: little annoyances.
