A trip down the "One Hit Wonder" Lane...,
By Ei "crzybookmoovielover" (Seekonk, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VH1: The Big 80's (Audio CD)
I was in junior high and high school throughout the 80's, and can remember hearing the songs on this album umpteen times. For the most part, the songs that appear here are mostly one hit wonders or the biggest hits from some of the acts that appear, like The Go-Go's and Night Ranger. Some selections are a bit obscure, and aren't as big hits as others. That is what makes the album so great. You'll find a few songs here that you may not have heard in a long time. Put it on and take a stroll down memory lane. You will have a wicked awesome time! This is good background music for an 80's theme party too..I have yet to do it myself, but I have thought about it. There are some good dance songs, "Safety Dance" is probably the best.

Solid Sampler of 1980's Pop Music,
By
This review is from: VH1: The Big 80's (Audio CD)
I went to high school from 1982-1985, and I used to despise this music as empty and shallow. I preferred the raw rock and roll of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and especially Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.
But music tastes change, and now, the music from this era sounds amazingly better than I remember it. This nostalgic 80's cd contains 15 well known hits of the decade, including "We've Got the Beat" by the Go-Gos, "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats, "Cars," by Gar Numan, "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone, "99 Red Balloons" by Nena, and more. The cd definitely emphasizes the new wave pop of the 1980s over other parts of the decade, and some will find this frustrating. But this was a fascinating part of the decade and so I don't mind at all. A great cd and worth getting if you don't already have these songs. Rev. Marc Axelrod

Good album - This is NOT a bad album,

These songs represent the best of new wave and rock in the early 1980s on MTV. Certainly, MJ, Madonna and Prince should be included, but their record companies won't license their music for compilations. If you want Madonna and the others, look elsewhere.

This one is even better than "more of the big 80's". These songs make me fondly remember a better time and a much better world.

It shipped to me super fast. All these songs were popular when I was a kid so listening to them brings back memories of my youth.

The 1980s was without a doubt the best decade for fun pop music. This album does not showcase the best of the best but it's a fun little playlist of 80s highlights from some very popular artists at the time. No, you won't find the biggest stars of the decade like Prince, Madonna and Michael. But the disc does have classic rock staples by the Cars ("You Might Think") and Night Ranger ("Sister Christian") plus a drum heavy pop epic from a former singer from Abba (Frida's "There's Something Going On") and one the coldest and most amazing electronic songs ever by Gary Numan ("Cars"). It's not the quintessential 80s playlist, but hits a lot of areas in the pop landscape (sadly, not an R&B/Urban/Hip-hop song in the mix) from the Go Go's to Culture Club (with "Time", not their most popular but a beautiful ballad showcasing Boy George's vocals).
The reason I actually bought this specific collection was for Dead or Alive's "Brand New Lover", because of it's the radio/video single mix which I could not find anywhere else (which is surprising). I really like the whole disc and don't disagree with any of the songs choices, but again it would have been nice to include R&B songs that were popular in the MTV area. Also, while it's surprising that the CD focuses on the early 80s, I would have figured any easy choice for the disc would be "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. It just seems obvious! I almost thought it had to be on there. Even though I bought the disc for one specific song, I'm very happy with it so if you love 80s pop, this is for you.
