Strutting through the audience, the indomitable Tina Turner opens VH1's Divas Live 99 by launching into "Simply the Best," proving she still is. She and honorary diva Elton John belt out an energetic version of "The Bitch Is Back," but the highlight is when Turner teases the captivated audience during the slow, sultry opening of "Proud Mary." A sexy dervish on stage, Turner easily out-swaggers her younger backup singer-dancers. Cher joins her to wrap up the classic hit, then segues into her own set in which she seems breathless, but you can't help admire her staying power (four decades!) and forgive her. Diva-in- training Leann Rimes performs "How Do I Live" with a sure, powerful voice. Next to her, Brandy is pleasant but unexciting. Her breathy rendition of "Everything I Do I Do for You" is disappointing, but it picks up when Faith Hill enters. Adding a passion and conviction that young Brandy can't yet muster, Hill grounds the song. Über-diva Whitney Houston gives us the drawn-out vocal gymnastics for which she's famous. Self-effacing she's not, but the girl can hold a note like nobody's business. Mary J. Blige matches Houston in a charged "Ain't No Way."

Divas Live 99 is a benefit for Save the Music, VH1's project to stress the importance of music education in public schools. Clocking in at an hour and 18 minutes, the video is edited down from the original special, but it moves along at a satisfying clip. Though not as stunning as the previous year's Divas Live, it's still an enjoyable concert from some of music's favorite performers. --Dana Van Nest

3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but still too edited, April 30, 2000
By
Sean Mann (Ormond Beach, Florida USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
I love the DIVAS specials VH1 frequently does every year and Iown Divas Live '98 and Divas Live '99 both on CD and DVD. The onlything is a problem I noticed a little on Divas Live '98 and definitely noticed on Divas '99. Why didn't they call the Divas Live '99 CD/Video/DVD "Divas Live: '99-The Chopped And Edited Version"? The cast was great. Tina Turner brought excellent stage presence and was probably the best performer of the show. I definitely loved her performing "Proud Mary" along Elton and Cher. Cher did good and Whitney really brought a certain groove and to the show. Brandy did the best she ever could to the show and it was amazing to hear her perform even as she had a sore throat or not. I like Faith Hill and the song (Everything I Do) I Do It For You and I never ever stop listening to the duet Brandy did with Faith Hill. LeAnn Rimes gave a good example of how their are young acts with talent unlike many teen singers today. I think it was an excellent thing for her to be there. I am also a huge fan of Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston so it was amazing to hear them perform a ballad together. Fianlly, back to why I gave it 3 stars. Does any one beside me think that VH1 tried to sell the Divas in too much of a way? Despite of how it seemed Cher lip-synched to her song "Believe" she didn't as she sang over a recorded tape. Maybe it didn't deserve to be on the CD but because of how Cher performs the song it could've been on the Video/DVD. LeAnn Rimes and Elton John performing "Written In The Stars" was worthy of being on the CD/Video/DVD as well but I guess VH1 didn't think so (who knows maybe they have a reason for doing this). Lastly why did they chop off Whitney's opener of a medley of It's Not Right But It's Okay/My Love Is Your Love? It's misleading as in the beginning introductions they say that Treach (of Naughty By Nature) guest stars but since he's on that medley he's not on the recording. After all, I could tell how edited it was when the presenter to introduce Whitney said "Here Is Whitney Houston" when instead you don't hear music you hear her say "Thank you very much." with a roaring audience applause right after the introduction . . . (I)n order to see any performances of Tina, Cher, Brandy, or Whitney I guess I'd buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vh1 Cut's Out Best from Video, February 2, 2000
By
J. Smith (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Vh1 cut out the best from this video. Although it is still a good video of the concert and Tina Turner and Whitney Houston sing their hearts out, VH1 cut out two of Whitney's hits and totally cut out Cher's new hit, Believe. Cher is a Diva in her own right. Who care's about Brandy and Mary J. Blidge. The hightlight is Tina Turner and Whitney singing "I will always Love You". Forgive me if I've misspelled or uncorrectly stated the names of these songs. J. Smith, Los Angeles, CA.
