4.0 out of 5 stars Legends, Great Music, and DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA!
If you want TRUE Diva's - this DVD has truly got it for you. Unlike the one before this (which should have been titled "The Aretha Franklin Show")this DVD has a variety of new artists and legends. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but still too edited
I love the DIVAS specials VH1 frequently does every year and Iown Divas Live '98 and Divas Live '99 both on CD and DVD. The onlything is a problem I noticed a little on Divas Live '98 and definitely noticed on Divas '99. Why didn't they call the Divas Live '99 CD/Video/DVD "Divas Live: '99-The Chopped And Edited Version"? The cast was great. Tina Turner...

Tina Turner brought excellent stage presence and was probably the best performer of the show. I definitely loved her performing "Proud Mary" along Elton and Cher. Cher did good and Whitney really brought a certain groove and to the show. Brandy did the best she ever could to the show and it was amazing to hear her perform even as she had a sore throat or not. I like Faith Hill and the song (Everything I Do) I Do It For You and I never ever stop listening to the duet Brandy did with Faith Hill. LeAnn Rimes gave a good example of how their are young acts with talent unlike many teen singers today. I think it was an excellent thing for her to be there. I am also a huge fan of Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston so it was amazing to hear them perform a ballad together. Fianlly, back to why I gave it 3 stars. Does any one beside me think that VH1 tried to sell the Divas in too much of a way? Despite of how it seemed Cher lip-synched to her song "Believe" she didn't as she sang over a recorded tape. Maybe it didn't deserve to be on the CD but because of how Cher performs the song it could've been on the Video/DVD. LeAnn Rimes and Elton John performing "Written In The Stars" was worthy of being on the CD/Video/DVD as well but I guess VH1 didn't think so (who knows maybe they have a reason for doing this). Lastly why did they chop off Whitney's opener of a medley of It's Not Right But It's Okay/My Love Is Your Love? It's misleading as in the beginning introductions they say that Treach (of Naughty By Nature) guest stars but since he's on that medley he's not on the recording. After all, I could tell how edited it was when the presenter to introduce Whitney said "Here Is Whitney Houston" when instead you don't hear music you hear her say "Thank you very much." with a roaring audience applause right after the introduction . . . (I)n order to see any performances of Tina, Cher, Brandy, or Whitney I guess I'd buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vh1 Cut's Out Best from Video, February 2, 2000
By
J. Smith (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Vh1 cut out the best from this video. Although it is still a good video of the concert and Tina Turner and Whitney Houston sing their hearts out, VH1 cut out two of Whitney's hits and totally cut out Cher's new hit, Believe. Cher is a Diva in her own right. Who care's about Brandy and Mary J. Blidge. The hightlight is Tina Turner and Whitney singing "I will always Love You". Forgive me if I've misspelled or uncorrectly stated the names of these songs. J. Smith, Los Angeles, CA.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed Diva DVD, September 10, 2003
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
There is no doubt about it within the rankings of live performaces from VH1. Still, they've been able to do a whole lot of good with their annual Divas benefits since 1998. It has raised millions of dollars for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. Still, there is such a thing about when a live concert is flawed with certain missed performances. Sometimes, you want to see it in full on VH1, if they can re-broadcast it again.

The VH1 Divas Live '99, was a wonderfully filled Diva night with so many great perfformances with Whitney Houston, Faith Hill, and a whole cast of divas to match. The performances range from showstopping ballads, like Whitney Houston performing her mega-hit I Will Always Love You, to surprise collaborations including Cher, Tina Turner and Elton John taking to the stage with Proud Mary. Unfortunately, like the live album, I was very, very dissapointed because there was a few songs that weren't set on this DVD that should've been there. They included Elton John and Leann Rimes performing Written In The Stars, Cher performing her comeback hit Believe, and Whitney Houston also had two extra songs that were not included. My Love Is Your Love and It's Not Right But Its Okay from My Love Is Your Love, were also performed that evening. Perhaps that next time VH1 does a Divas benefit, they can include all the performances.

It was just a shame that it wasn't in the fullest form with Divas Live '99. Still, is you recorded it the night it was aired, you didn't miss a thing. Here, the DVD misses a lot. Still, if you don't have VH1 and you want to get the Diva mode, try renting this collection and watch it on video.

4.0 out of 5 stars Legends, Great Music, and DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA!, October 27, 2004
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
If you want TRUE Diva's - this DVD has truly got it for you. Unlike the one before this (which should have been titled "The Aretha Franklin Show")this DVD has a variety of new artists and legends. Opening the show, the incredible Tina Turner exits her limousine and walks down the red carpet to the intro of her hit "Simply The Best". CLEARLY the audience agrees with her song's message - she is simply the best. She then sings "The Bitch is Back" with Elton John (ommited was "Lets Stay Together" which aired on the original television version) and is joined by Cher for a duet on "Proud Mary" - one of the highlights of the show. Oh, but Cher...how bright she shines for a moment through "If I Could Turn Back Time" until she decides to lip-synch "Believe". Wow. What a let-down. What was SHE thinking. But the best is yet to come. Here comes country bumpkin LeAnne Rimes who sings "Written In The Stars" with Elton. Who made HIM a Diva? Legend - yes. Diva - not so much. Then there's Faith Hill before it was cool to like Faith. She's a Diva in training. She and Brandi sing "For You I Will" but you'll wish that they hadn't. And then here comes Whitney...let the drama begin. She sings "Its Not Right But It's Okay"...yeah, its not. And then sings with Mary J. Bleige who was going through a severe ghetto period - the dress and tatoos say it all. Whitney sings "I Will Always Love You" but of course she has to bring Bobby Brown and her little girl (Bobby in a wig) up onstage to declare her love for them. About the only great thing she does is when she invites Chaka Khan to join her on "I'm Every Woman"...yeah, all the divas - MINUS Cher, Tina & Elton, who were smart - join them onstage for this closing number. Oh its all so much to take in. The only thing it lacks is Bette Midler cussing everyone out and some drag queen dressed as Streisand shouting 'WHERE'S BARBARA!?!' in the front row. All of them bring their own bands, the lighting/effects/sound are good and everyone from Mark Lauer, Star Jones, Susan Lucci and Martha Stewart are all in audience. Hmmmmm....ehhh, go ahead and buy it. If you took the time to look it up on Amazon.Com, go ahead. You've come this far! LOL ;-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Whitney, Cher, Brandy, Tina: Good show, but, August 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
The follow up to Divas Live was not as great as the original. However the stars Whitney, Cher, Brandy, Tina, and a few special guests including Sir Elton John did an alright performance. I thought Whitney and Tina did the best in this show, but Elton kind of stole the show in some ways. I thought it was bland with more special guests than headline performers. The first Divas show with Celine, Gloria, Aretha, Shania, and Carey only had Carole King as a special guest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best, August 11, 2004

This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
i bought this dvd simply for Tina Turner i thought she was a knock out in this concert. And I Loved Cher coming out to do Proud Mary with her most people didn't like that yes i know as well as anyone Tina can handle it on her own but most people don't understand the bond between Tina and Cher as she said with her own mouth If it wasn't for Cher she would have Never had the courage to leave Ike. she also said that the reason for Cher doing proud mary with her was because she has already planned to retire when that concert took place and she wanted to have Cher onstage with her one last time and personally to Me.. Cher and Tina ARE SIMPLY THE BEST

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning experience, April 12, 2000
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
A perfect example of a live-experience you can't describe in words. Whitney Houston, solo, is an incredible experience whether you like her or not. The best Live-DVD with very good sound quality. Played on a very good DTS-system like Acurus and Totem acoustic will take you to another world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitney #1 diva, February 1, 2011
This review is from: VH1 Divas Live 99 (DVD)
whitney stole the show that night! i am disappointed that vh1 removed her unforgettable renditions of it's not right but okay/my love is your love. whitney actually opened doors for Mary J Blige that night( Mary J will recall that later at a Bet celebration honoring whitney). The "I will always love you" preformance was one of the best delivered (emotional, powerful and memorable). Tina did a great job that night opening the show with a diva-like introduction. oh hell, faith hill, brandy, lee ann rimes were diva in process. Divo elton john was ok and cher just can't sing live.
I am fair enough to say that Whitney and Tina saved the show....That's why they can both be called DIVA..
