3.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I bought this book when I was new to VHDL and looking for a good book to learn from, this is not it. The book consists of short sections, each showing a different design. This might be a great reference, but I haven't found a use for it just yet.

I bought this book when I was new to VHDL and looking for a good book to learn from, this is not it. The book consists of short sections, each showing a different design. This might be a great reference, but I haven't found a use for it just yet.

If you're new, Pedroni's "Circuit Design with VHDL" is worth taking a look at. Pedroni's book is wildly helpful. I found it to be the best laid out book yet. Also, if you're new, the one that has the 70's style squares around the rim of it is good. I borrowed that from a friend when I started; I don't have it in front of me, so I can't quote the name. That book is wonderful for someone just starting, however expect to out grow it quickly and move onto Pedroni's book.

While this book is quite informative, it's also somewhat frustrating.

1.) One must read through incorrect language usage. There are a number of instances of incomplete sentences, noun/verb mismatch, etc. I had to re-read a number of sentences to understand what was MEANT, because what was MEANT is not what was WRITTEN.
2.) Typographical errors also exist in a number of places.
3.) While there are a number of diagrams with the text, somebody didn't take the time to make sure the text matches the diagrams. In many cases, the code that is listed in diagrams does not match the text. This could be particularly confusing to somebody who cannot interpolate what was meant by the author.
4.) The structure could be greatly improved. The first two chapters seem to dive right into the language, but then in Chapter 3 the author steps all the way back and does a line-by-line description of code. By then, it's too late.

This book could be a lot better if the author would take the time to have somebody thoroughly proof-read the book. It doesn't look like he did this. I kept a marker next to me while reading so I could manually make corrections while reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meaza, August 15, 2007
This review is from: VHDL:Modular Design and Synthesis of Cores and Systems, Third Edition (Hardcover)

I found this the best book available on VHDL in the market today. It is a great book for understanding computer engineers who have little or no background in VHDL. It gives a strong description of writing the cods. The CD makes a great add to this book. I liked the organization for the material and the explanation of the examples.
