We bought this for my parents so that they can see their new Grand-daughter (our daughter). My parents are beyond the age where they feel comfortable in learning. They cant use a computer and are scared to even try! They have wifi internet in the home though!

Anyhow, we were able to program this to log into their wifi automatically. We also set it to automatically log them on and also set it to automatically open their camera when they are on a skype call. We set it to only accept calls from people in their approved contacts. We set it so that it did not automatically answer calls so that they could "compose" themselves before manually answering the calls. We manage their skype account from our computer and make sure that no nutters get into their contacts list. All the settings are saved even if the unit is switched off.

All they have to do is plug the device into the electrical outlet and turn it on (button on the back). It then automatically connects to the wifi and logs them in. They then leave it on all the time, (it has a default power saving mode that automatically wakes it up when a call comes in and goes to sleep after a few mins of inactivity). To answer calls they press the green button and hang up with the red button. Making calls is a little more complicated but will still be considered super easy for most people.

Screen size is smaller than a laptop screen but the quality of the image is the same as Skype on any good computer. Speakers are more than good enough for skype to sound as good as it ever can.

The battery is stated to last only 20mins and you would be lucky to get the full 20 mins. However, the battery will last long enough to just unplug it from power while you move it to a more comfortable place for making your call. For the size of the machine, I would have expected it to work for several hours and this is the only reason why I have given it 4 stars instead of 5

I am going to set up a webcam in our babies nursery and use one of these Skype phones as baby monitor in the kitchen..

Asus Videophone Rocks January 11, 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very cautious in buying this appliance after reading the past reviews and comments made by others. I bought the device for my mom who is in her 80s and lives alone. She also speaks no English and doesn't have a clue how to navigate menus, deal with wireless networks or login into Skype. I will spare you the time of reading the full review - this appliance rocks and I am so very glad I took the chance.

For the rest of you here is what I found to be cool -

    1. I didn't need to read the instructions. Just insert the batter, plug in the AC connector and push the power button - it boots in less then 30 seconds and your greeted with an easy to use setup wizard.

    2. Enter your default language, selected your date/time region and country.

    3. It will automatically find wireless networks in your home or office and auto-detect the security type. So you just need to select your network and enter passkey.

    4. Enter your Skype account information or create one from scratch. It will then ask if you want to "auto-login" and if so going forward you will always be logged in automatically - which is a nice feature for the elderly.

That's it - you are Skyping.

It also does voice recognition so to dial a number you can navigate the contacts or press and hold the "dial" button and then say "Call xxxx" and it will find and dial that person.

I tested this device with a Mac and Windows laptop as well as with the iPhone 4 Skype app. It all worked the first time - both placing and receiving calls. The video quality was very good, worked well under low light, but some light is helpful. The sound is good and clear. Overall I am very happy with it - to the point I will get another one from more home office and minimize the clutter.

    Hope this was helpful.

I have been working in I.T. for over 13 years and when I saw this device I thought it looked like a smart and well thought out product in consumer electronics so I ordered it. I like it because it is all self contained for the purpose of using Skype VOIP. Unfortunately I have to reset it constantly to send and receive calls. I have tried everything from manually setting the IP information and tried different DNS servers. upgraded to an expensive dual channel N spec wireless router. Tried wired and wireless. enabled QOS in my router and prioritized Skype traffic. I have a fast internet connection with low latency and relatively good host peering. Nothing works to keep constant connectivity. I tried looking for a firmware update on the device but it is currently up to date. There are no visible signs of malfunction or error as the unit doesn't "lock up" or visibly fail. Signal strength is great and its set to auto login but when I go to make a call, nothing happens until I reset it and have to place all the network and Skype login info. back in.

Frustrating and I am probably going to return it.
