I have been in some trouble in my past, and for the first time I finally discharged parole here in California. I purchased this VIPERTEK VTS-189 with a very skeptical outlook being that I have been hit with pepper spray, stun guns and tasers more times that I care to recall here. I have been in prison riots and have been shot with both rubber block guns and twice by a .223 round. Pain does NOT scare or intimidate me! Therefore, first test was conducted on myself! Let's talk about effectiveness now. This is a panic weapon. It NEEDS to be easy to fire. It is almost too easy to fire. If you plan on using this unit on someone, you may want to know how it works and what it feels like. I tested it on myself TWICE, once at my own hand, and once by handing it to a friend and letting him hit me. I went down immediately. $100.00 was in it if I could take a three (3) second burst. I did not make it! I lost my balance and wet myself! I won't go for round 3! Want something that works? You are looking at it.

Please keep in mind that there are many choices to choose from here and elsewhere, but where else can you read a review like this? I am confident with this tool and knowing that my fiance and her appropriate training will be safe with this flashlight. It is incognito and pretty safe. Even with the safety on it will hurt you. The spark jumps quite far and is very intimidating even to the one wielding the weapon. When you get one, you will want to familiarize yourself with it in every way. Use the safety cap, and the safety switch on the butt of the light if you are not going to be using it as a flashlight.

Treat this unit like a lethal weapon and use it responsibly.

I bought this for my college aged daughter and wanted to show her what it did and how to use it. Guns are not allowed on campus and it is very easy to show the damage a gun would do. It's not so easy to show what a stun gun will do.
I'm sure not that many of the people that have reviewed this product have actually used it on themselves.
More on that later.....

The box arrived promptly. I opened the box and for some reason the flashlight was actually on - strange. It had been on long enough that the stun feature didn't work and the light was quite dim.
The Build quality was as expected for the price. It was solid enough. I used the included cord to charge it up as the instructions requested. Once charged it arced properly.

Pros:
The sound and bright arc is intimidating. If you aren't expecting the sound you will jump.
The red button is very easy to press.
Works for shocking. If not expecting the normal reaction will be to get far away from it.

Cons:
The red button is very easy to accidentally press.
The flashlight/stungun has a cover, better described as a shield, around the lens and stungun contacts. In my opinion this needs to be REMOVED when you intend to protect yourself with this device. Otherwise it is hard to shock with the shield in place. Airspace is hard for electricity to travel through - the straightest path is from contact to contact. Keeping the shield in place means the arc will have to travel further...so likely won't work well with it in place unless it is VERY close.
The placement on the body to be shocked is crucial. I recommend head, face or torso. Shocking on extremities can be shaken off.

Now for the meat of the story:
I've shocked myself for demonstration purposes a total of 3 times. I haven't had the guts to try a torso shock yet. Shocks to extremities (legs, arms) are startling to say the least. You must have the shield off for best results. If the shield is on and touching the skin there is a high chance of it just arcing between the contacts instead of shocking the attacker.
I can't say that it is 19 million volts.. it may be.. it may not be. But it does hurt. Depending on placement the shock can be either startling or painful. The worst pain I experienced was when I shocked my thigh, which I would liken it to getting stung by a really big bee. You know the feeling that you get? It's like you are taken off guard and don't know WTF just got you. It hurts, is shocking (in more than one way), and may deter. Keep in mind I was doing this to myself. That means the anticipation factor was there - I knew it was coming. I prepared myself and I also have a high pain tolerance and threshold. It still catches you off guard.
Now, imagine if you weren't expecting it. I think it would scare the bajeezers out of me and I'd flee. However, I'm not an attacker and don't think like one.

with all this in mind I make the recommendation that it is as described and should be effective. I think with the proper knowledge (removing the shield, going for torso or head shots) that this would be fairly effective. Now if it is a crazed or drugged lunatic with a misconception of pain...a gun would be better.

I bought this stun gun for two reasons: I wanted something that looked inconspicuous and that I could depend upon in an emergency. This stun gun fits both of those characteristics. At first glance, it looks like a regular flashlight. The actual flashlight part of it is not extremely bright and is focused in a small area, but I didn't buy it for the flashlight performance. The flashlight is more like camouflage to me than an actual flashlight. The stun gun function, however, does exactly what I want it to do. Firing it into the air makes a sound that alone can deter a potential assailant or scare an animal away. I tested it on myself both for the sake of this review and so I would know how effective the stun gun would be in a real-world situation. In my experience, the stun gun was very effective. I tested it first on the side of my buttock while standing, and I immediately fell to the floor. As I am writing this review, I can still feel a small burning sensation. I tested it again right below my rib cage, and although it did not make me fall over like the buttock test did, I bent over in pain for a few seconds. In both of the tests that I did, the duration of the shock was only a fraction of a second, so I can say with confidence that holding down the shock button for a second or longer will wield pretty good results. Are there better stun guns out there that are more painful and can disable people better than this one? Definitely. However, this stun gun is an amazing little tool that does its job well for a low price. I just hope I never have to use it on someone else.

I was actually really surprised when i received the stun gun in the mail. vipertek makes a great cheap reliable stun gun. This is the second one i have bought and my girlfriend loved it its a great gift for any woman in your life... Flashlight nice and bright and the stun gun itself has unbelievable power.

Bought this at a gunshow recently and paid 19.99 which I thought was a great price......until I checked it here at Amazon. The unit comes with a USB charger and a carrying holster with a belt loop.

It is LOUD and the light is brighter than I expected.

The only downside I have found is the red "fire" button is very easy to depress after the unit is set to on by the small slide switch on its base. My wife scared the bejesus out of our small dog last night just before taking him out for a walk when she accidently fired it. He cowered, scurried away from her and wouldn't go near her until I calmed him down. If the loudness of the taser is any indication of its stopping power it should stop an assailant in his tracks......if it doesn't first blow out his ear drums.

Ionly gave it 4 stars because I thought it too easy to fire. Be careful when handling it and you shouldn't have any problems.
Because it has a snap off protective cap it prevents being stunned by accidentally hitting the "fire" button. On the other hand because it is easy and quick to fire it may be a plus when under the stress of an attack.

Excellent product, excellent price, excellent service! Bought this 19M volt taser flashlight for my fiancee, who is volunteering the summer in a pretty seedy part of town. As many have said before me, the sound alone as this thing goes off is enough to make an attacker think twice.

Pros:
- Perfect size to fit in purse. Also comes with a belt loop carry strap.
- Flashlight is bright.
- Switch on bottom controls power to the stun button and the flashlight toggle, reducing the risk of accidentally going off in a purse.
- Easily removed shield/cover provides added protection against unintentional firing.

Cons:
- Not a significant con, and the ladies who would carry this in a purse probably consider it a pro, but I would have preferred the whole thing to have been made of a denser, heavier material.

I do recommend this product. It is a decent flashlight and a great taser. Furthermore it is more functional than pepperspray, which must be directed at the eyes/nose of an assailant. This is more practical. Jabbing it into the thigh of an assailant that comes from behind is as effective as jabbing him in the chest head on.

I was looking for a similar product that i recently purchased @ a gun show.the one i bought @ the show is all aluminum and a bit different comparing to the vts-189 with the switch on bottom that turns the stun gun on.the flashlight works by sliding the on/off switch located about half way down the flashlight on its side.the switch on botton has to be on for the stun electrics to work but the flashlight works either way.ok now on with my review on the vts-189 compared to the aluminum one.1st its not as heavy bc its plastic, durability may not be as good.2nd it has a plastic snap cover that protects the eletric prongs when being stored or carried and the flashlight will work with it on.3rd the switch on the bottom has to be on for flashlight and stungun to function.4th the stungun button is located above the flashlight sliding switch.up/ondown/off
red button easy push to activate stungun.both of the 2 different stunguns came with holster case, cloth cleaning patch, house charger and packed in a small box lined with linen/silk type material.both of the flashlights are about the same which very bright beam that is great.each of the stungun electrics seem adequate:same: i paid 25dlrs for the aluminum one @ the gun show and feels somewhat more sturdy and durable and i like the fact that the switch has to be on for the stungun to work.i ordered 4 vts-189s for xmas presents for 15dlrs each.tho these pretty much work the same and was 10dlrs cheaper,it is a great deal.for having in or beside the night stand or in a vehicle it will suffice.as for as the extra 10dlrs i spent on the aluminum one it was worth it aswell.if you are looking for a great inexpensive combo light/stungun unit buy this vipertek.price wise it will satisfy your needs for a just in case self protect unit.if you want a unit that is a touch better in material then try to find the 'police'aluminum unit for 25dlrs.im suse thats all you will ever need in a flashlight stunner combo.!please!please!!note!when testing the functionality of any stungun do not press and hold down to activate stungun electrics no more than half second bursts.these units are powerful and the electroids, volts, curent will back feed into the inner componets resulting in possible weakening and or destroy the units electric function/stunner.dont press and hold for any longer.the electroids has to be able to have something or someone to use as a vessel for the electricity to pass thru.i hope my review helped anyone thinking about getting a light stunner combo thats affordable and will work.im happy with my purchase for the money.

I was looking to test it with my kids or my wife but they all refused, so I told them to test it on me. They all wanted to do it. Not sure why...
anyway my oldest daughter jumped in first, and it really put me down with just 2 second touch. It left me with a sense of burn in the contacted area that it last me about 2 days, and it was not a direct skin contact.
I want to believe that is part of what is supposed to do. And HELL! no, no, no..... definitely I didn't go for a second round.

This is my first stun gun. For under thirteen bucks I couldn't resist. I was worried it would be cheaply built but it's not. The ark is quite loud. It echoes throughout my neighborhood which is pleasing. The flashlight is not too bright, but it's enough navigate in the dark. The stun gun does not fire while the flashlight is in use. I zapped my thigh for a split second and it felt like I was being burnt and stabbed at the same time. Instructions say not to zap for more than a second mid air or you might break the zapper, but the good news is you can hold the zapper against the body of an assailant for as long as you want without damaging the zapper. Yaaay!!! Also, I've been careful not to do bursts longer than a second, but I've been firing it quite a bit and the battery is holding up well. Next, I plan on finding someone holding a will work for food sign and pay them $20 to take a five second burst to the buttock and see if it incapacitates and incontenents them. :D
