Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

Graphic for determining the right size HDTV for your room

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

The picture is very nice.

Having 2 HDMI inputs on the back has been nice because now I can plug in my computer and xbox 360 to the same TV in HD on both.
William A. Deblois
The LED edge back-lighting is designed very poorly indeed.

An LED/LCD HDTV for under $200 was unthinkable a year ago. Vizio gets points for marketing new technology at low prices. But all is certainly not well. First, the good: the picture is so crisp that my years of skepticism about and resistance to blurry LCD (and now LED) TVs was removed--really fine detail, clarity, brightness, and an amazing 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, without harshness or reflectivity.

But there are big problems. I tried *three* of these units, and all had the same issues, none of which the Vizio personnel would even admit they had heard about (except the firmware update, obviously, described below).

First of all, the firmware version usually needs updating: if the "last channel" button on the remote works randomly and an image-size setting called "normal" is a tiny picture at the center of the screen, click "Help" on the remote and check the firmware version under "System Info." If it's anything under Vers. 1.49, go to vizio.com and download and install the M190MV update according to the on-line instructions. The firmware fix became available in November 2010, but all three auditioned sets--purchased and exchanged between late December 2010 and late February 2011--needed updating!

Another glitch: TV program information is incomplete. Each click of "Info" on the remote reveals more about the program. However, the playing times and program lengths are random from channel to channel. Setting the TV's internal clock has no effect. Cable or OTA broadcasters include this most basic piece of information in their signals but this TV can't read it. Vizio Customer Service was completely ignorant and unhelpful (remember, I tried three identical TVs), as it is with virtually everything.

I give the Vizio M190MV 19 inch LED HDTV a five star rating primarily because of the picture quality. I use this TV in my RV. It is the perfect size for this application and as I said, it has great picture quality. It also has a great selection of IO for accessories. There are no sharp corners on the unit which makes it safe for close quarters. The built quality is also excellent. I highly recommend this TV.

Nice TV , the only issue is the volume, it is either too low at lowest volume setting and too loud at next setting for those who like to fall asleep with the TV on.

Great value for the money. Would have been 5 stars if not for the "tinny" sounding speakers. Bought some Logitech speakers that would fix that.

Excellent TV. I bought this for our RV to replace a piece of junk that came already installed but broke after less than two years of RVing (meaning infrequent use). It's very light, I can hold it with one hand, fit the armature perfectly, and has good sound and picture. It's also AC and DC, one thing not emphasized, even tho I doubt I'll ever use the DC feature. Outstanding buy.

I was buying a small LCD for mounting to the wall in my workout room - something to watch while on the treadmill or the elliptical. However, this television has several issues that made me decide to return it and get a 22" Panasonic LCD, which is much better, larger, better picture and for less money.

First, you can't really wall mount this TV, at least not easily. The VESA bolt pattern is 100mm x 100mm, which is standard, but the bottom bolt holes are only about 1/4 inch from the TV inputs (cable, HDMI, etc). So any wall mount bracket you get will actually cover up the inputs (I know, because I tried several). Other flat panels leave some space between the bottom of bolt holes and the inputs so that this doesn't happen. I guess Vizio never tried to wall mount this TV when they were designing it.

Second, I went to the trouble of running an electrical outlet and cable outlet in the wall and placed the outlets right behind the wall mount bracket so that everything would be neat and hidden. Except Vizio designed their power supply with this HUGE (I'm not kidding) wall wart of a power adapter. This thing must be 4" x 4" x 1" thick, and it plugs in from the EDGE (doesn't lie flat on the wall), so it actually sticks out 4" when it's plugged in. So there's no way it will fit behind the TV mounted to the wall. Totally stupid.

Lastly, the stretch modes on this TV are useless. One mode puts a tiny picture in the middle of the screen (no idea what that's for) and then they have this "panoramic" mode which is totally unwatchable.

My advice, buy almost anything else (I bought the Panasonic 22" LCD here for less money and it has none of these issues.)

I did give this two stars because (1) The HDTV picture is decent, and (2) the sound is good for a small TV.

I bought this TV at Target the other day. I wanted a TV for my bar so I can mount in the corner for my guest who had their backs to my bigger TV. I wanted to get an LED just because its thinner and I wanted something that wouldn't take up too much room. Originally I was looking at the Samsung 19" LED but it was going for around $350. I seen this Vizio at Target and it was $200 and I'm not one to buy "cheaper" TVs, I usually sway to Panasonic,Sony, and Samsung. But I figured I just wanted something cheap and $200 was not bad, then the guy scanned it and it was going for $170 so I jumped on it.

Hooked the TV up that night and I love it. The picture is very nice. The packaging was very good. The TV is thin, of course being an LED, but very small which is good. The TV itself has touch sensitive buttons on the actual TV (like the older PS3) which I thought was a cool feature for such a cheap TV. It was easy to mount. It has all the hook ups you would need, two HDMIs which is great. Like I said before the picture is great in HD, very clear and smooth. The colors may be a little off, I still have to play with them. The only downside, like all LCD technology TVs, is the picture really shines when you're looking at it from head on. If you look at it from the side it dims a little and not as sharp, but I knew that already just because of the technology. I don't know about the sound quality because I didn't hook up audio just because I'm going to have the main TV playing the audio plus with football/baseball games, you don't really need audio. But i can imagine it's not too good, when has any 19" TV had stellar sound. Overall I would say buy this TV if you don't want to spend a lot but one a nice little TV. I only have been using it for a couple days now, but I am very impressed with this TV and makes more happy that I only spent $170.
