With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

That said there are three problems for me.
The first is minor and that is that the bezel lights up to show the vizio logo and touch buttons. The light is quite bright and does not dim while you are watching the TV so it is pretty distracting, especially the logo which is large.
The second is my main problem and that is that the TV is just too loud. I use it in my bedroom and, when it is quiet, a volume of 1 is bordering on too loud. If you kick it up to 2 or 3 it is REALLY loud. A volume of 10 or more is ear-shattering even when not in a quiet room. This is very strange and seems almost like some sort of software bug where the entire volume range is shifted to the left. HDMI inputs having basically no signal loss are even louder than the A/V and Component inputs.
The third problem is that this TV doesn't seem to have a zoom function to allow letter-boxed 4:3 shows to fill the screen. This is a problem if you are using any video sources where this can occur (I have it hooked up to a TiVo series2 for instance)
So I really want to like this TV but the volume problem is becoming a deal-breaker for me. I tried contacting customer support by email and got no response as well so if that sort of thing matters to you take that into consideration.
Lightweight and side inputs
Owners manual could be a bit better as the printing is a bit on the small size.
Having said that, the biggest drawback I've noticed so far is the tinny sound quality. Granted the speakers are not as substantial as those on the CRT TV this unit is replacing but the volume is more than adequate for casual use.
The viewing angle is fairly critical, a limitation found in LCD TV's but again, it isn't fair to compare this to the $1200 52" Samsung you have hanging in your living room.
Don't be confused by the use of LED in the product description. The only LED component to this is on the front panel of the TV.
One caveat, however. It appears that this TV is on the down slope of the product life cycle. Vizio already sells another version of this TV that contains internet and Wi-Fi built in. Maybe that was why I was able to purchase this TV for less than $220. Consider this when comparison shopping for this model.
