Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

Graphic for determining the right size HDTV for your room

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Great picture, very good sound separation.

Every other piece of information is right but that: the times listed are random and vary from channel to channel; setting the internal clock makes no difference.

I bought this tv for my college dorm room. The picture quality is excellent, which is what I expected. What I didn't expect was the great sound quality. Taking into consideration that this tv is so small and thin, the speakers are good enough that you don't need a set of external speakers. My tv isn't super loud like the other review says, so I guess he just got unlucky and got a defective one. I use this tv to play xbox and as a computer monitor (both using HDMI) and it works great for both purposes. Although the stand looked a little unstable to me, after setting it up I found that it works just as well as any other stand. Would have been perfect if it had one more HDMI port.

I bought this TV at Costco right when it came out and have been using it in my bedroom for a few weeks. The TV is great in terms of size and picture quality and especially inputs which is why I bought it.

That said there are three problems for me.

The first is minor and that is that the bezel lights up to show the vizio logo and touch buttons. The light is quite bright and does not dim while you are watching the TV so it is pretty distracting, especially the logo which is large.

The second is my main problem and that is that the TV is just too loud. I use it in my bedroom and, when it is quiet, a volume of 1 is bordering on too loud. If you kick it up to 2 or 3 it is REALLY loud. A volume of 10 or more is ear-shattering even when not in a quiet room. This is very strange and seems almost like some sort of software bug where the entire volume range is shifted to the left. HDMI inputs having basically no signal loss are even louder than the A/V and Component inputs.

The third problem is that this TV doesn't seem to have a zoom function to allow letter-boxed 4:3 shows to fill the screen. This is a problem if you are using any video sources where this can occur (I have it hooked up to a TiVo series2 for instance)

So I really want to like this TV but the volume problem is becoming a deal-breaker for me. I tried contacting customer support by email and got no response as well so if that sort of thing matters to you take that into consideration.

I purchased ths for my bedroom that replaced an older analog big bulky set I could hardly carry. This Vizio LED LCD: 1080p HD with Razor is a great set. Very lightweight and connecting it was a breeze. Picture is just super and the sound is fine. I think for the money I got myself a great HDTV.

Pros:
Picture quality
Price
Lightweight and side inputs
Easy set-up

Cons:
Owners manual could be a bit better as the printing is a bit on the small size.

LED HDTV at this price point is extremely unusual and the crisp, detailed picture gives the more expensive Samsungs and Sonys a run for their money. Having experienced several M190MVs (19") and now a larger M220MV (22"), it's clear that although the larger TV has full 1080p HD--unusual in itself for something as small as 22", all other features and appearance are shared, including, sadly, engineering peculiarities that spoil it. For one thing, the tuner simply won't read the broadcast times when one presses "Info." Every other piece of information is right but that: the times listed are random and vary from channel to channel; setting the internal clock makes no difference. In actuality, this is not a major issue. But there are several truly big problems. The volume level from the headphone jack is so quiet that it won't even drive headphones--using dangerous TV volume levels. And one cannot add powered computer speakers through the headphone jack and get any useful result either. Apparently, some of the Vizios in other series are normal. Here it's a real problem because the powered computer-speaker solution is critical to compensate for the thin, bass-free sound coming from the tiny speakers in these flat TVs; so you're stuck with bad sound (though not as bad as it could be). The colors are pretty far off; red levels are extreme. So black & white...just isn't, with a severe red bias. And this is even after spending weeks custom-setting the picture, including lowering the red gain at least 20 points and raising the blue by as much as ten. But the red affects everything else. In color, red has a pink tint, rather than the normally more orange one in real life--that is, unless you want skin tones (all ethnicities) to look slightly green, and blues to look purple.Read more ›

My Vizio [my second] arrived when expected and performed just as expected. I have no complaints. I could not have expected more unless it had been free! I have no connection with Vizio or Amazon.

This television has performed extremely well and the speaker volume is very good. With 2 HDMI inputs plus a composite input, everything I want to connect is connected and performing very well. Great buy. Very pleased.

I wanted to replace my 13" old fashioned tv in my bedroom and my son, who is an electrical engineer, suggested I purchase a Vizio. It was very easy to set up, I did it myself, and I have been enjoying it very much. I read the other reviews and some said that the sound was "tinny", but it sounds just fine to me. Love the bigger picture. I am sure I will enjoy this tv for many years to come. Fast delivery too, arrived less than 48 hours after I ordered it.
