VIzio-No longer the crap brand!,
By Chris L "Chris" (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I bought this TV for my dorm after a few months of researching. Its really one of the best values out there for its size. The retail price is something like $320, thats frankly ridiculous! I paid $240 at BJ's. The 22'' TV market is really bad. You have on one side the budget Sylvania Models or the "good" brands that cost and arm and a leg. I had always had the impression that Vizio was just another budget brand, but after doing many comparison shopping trips and watching the TV, its clear that Vizio is to TVs as Hyundai is to cars. Hyundai came to the US with terrible quality cars that were cheap. Vizio came to the market with TVs that had a reputation for being cheap. Slowly, Hyundai improved their quality and now are considered an excellent value. Same thing with Vizio. They say 1080p doesn't matter unless its a really big TV, but for the price its a nice feature just knowing its there. As for the sound: I'm not even using this as a factor in my review. Has anyone ever heard the speakers of ANY other flat-panel TV? Seriously. They ALL suck. I have never heard a flat-panel TV with good sound. I have a 42'' Samsung, 32'' Samsung and 19'' Sylvania and all of them have terrible sound. Its just not worth even considering when you're in the market for TVs. After all, you're spending all that money on an HDTV, can't you afford to get a set of cheap speakers?
The internet Apps feature is awesome. I had initially seen the TV and was intrigued, but not really sold because I figured you'd need to plug it in to your router. Then I found out it had Wi-Fi! Needless to say, I was pretty impressed! The Apps are really cool, though I don't see much use in going on Facebook on your TV. The Netflix App is very very useful and works flawlessly. Seriously consider this TV. Go to your local electronics store and compare it to the other TVs on the wall. Its equal to if not better than the other models.

Great Picture, not the best Sound,
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I bought this tv from Target as soon as available. I took it home hooked it up, and the picture was fantastic. I played around with the different features, checked my facebook, watched part of a movie on netflix, and I watched part of the NBA Finals. All of these were crystal clear...
The one problem is the sound. If you are used to listening to an old computer monitor with built in speakers, then you are probably fine. If you have watched tv on a regular tv then you will be heartbroken. The sound is just terrible. It does not get the loudest and it just plain sounds like a poorly designed computer monitor. Sound was just a deal breaker, so I brought it back and bought a Samsung.

Great picture and wireless in the bedroom,

Bought this TV for the VIA Internet Application. Not expecting great sound from a Razor thin TV, I added a pair of Logitech S120 2.0 Multimedia Speakers for under $10. Turn off the SRS TruSurround HD in the advanced audio menu and it sounds just fine. Logitech S120 2.0 Multimedia Speakers

False documentation on feature,
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I don't think it unreasonable to expect that if the specs and manual list a feature, that the feature is present. In this case, it was important to our purchase that we be able to view pictures from a USB (thumb) drive. This is a documented feature, including on p.13 of the manual. There is a USB port, but it's only for tech service, as Vizio has not yet released the firmware to make picture viewing possible -- even though it says in the manual that it's an available feature, and we confirmed it with Vizio support prior to purchase.
After futzing around for an hour trying to make it work and finding no menu selections for the USB source, Vizio tech support said they're working on the firmware, with no set release date, but that it is not a current feature EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS IT'S A FEATURE IN THE MANUAL! Back it goes.

Perfect Little TV,

This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I got this TV the day it came out from Target. Perfect for watching Amazon's Video On Demand in my bedroom. I hooked up some good speakers to it because I already had them and they worked great with the TV. I think I will buy the same exact type of TV (Razor LED Vizio with Internet) only bigger for the downstairs when they come out with the same thing in a larger TV. This Tv is so light that I almosted started to laugh and think of it as a giant I Pad with no touch screen. This one is a keeper!!!
Bright, clear, very easy to hook up to the internet, it's perfection! A WOW! By the way, I hooked up a pair of Sony Srs-Zx1 Stereo Speakers. I purchased them from Amazon!Sony Extreme Bass Stereo Speakers with RemoteSony Srs-Zx1 Stereo Speakers (Silver)

Best Bang for the buck and fun too!,

I just received the tv which is fantastic and I finished watching a netflix movie and some videos on blip tv. It is very cool and I really don't know what the fuss about the sound is. I'm listening to it in my bedroom and can hear it in my bathroom across the hall when it's turned up. No distortion. I would say the best bang for the buck and loads of fun with the internet apps. I bought this for my rv so I could watch some programs when I only have wifi and no tv reception.
If you get real creative there is a way to make your phone a wifi hot spot and just use your phones internet connection to allow the tv to connect to stream wifi even when you are in the boondocks with no wifi or tv signal as long as you have a cell phone connection.

Great TV with Internet built in,

Bought this for a bedroom tv. Easy to set up. Includes wireless N band internet connectivity. Picture is awesome, but the sound is just OK.
This TV has Widgets that you can add to access various online accounts like Yahoo, Netflix, Pandora, plus more. There is a huge choice of these widgets. You can get your TV program listings even without a cable box. The stand and control are a bit gimpy. You'll love it. Sam's Club has it for $239 as of 8-10-10.

Perfect Portable Streaming TV,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I bought this TV for only one thing: a portable TV to stream Netflix. My main TV in the living room already has a DVD player, satellite box, game console and Roku Player for streaming Netflix. But I wanted a TV for my bedroom and to place in front of my exercise bike. The TV is light, very thin and because it has a wireless LAN the only cord is the power cord. The picture is fine and as everybody has noted the speakers suck. If you want a small TV for wirelessly streaming Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand or Vudu, then I would recommend it. The price of a cheap 22" TV plus a Roku player is basically the same as this TV, so why not? The only odd thing I've noticed is sometimes the TV will turn itself on. The remote is in a bookcase so the dog is not stepping on it and there are no other Irda emitters in the bedroom. I'll just find the TV on some days.
So what would make it perfect, besides the speaker issue you can fix with some cheap computer speakers? A Hulu app would be nice (last time I checked there wasn't one.) An accessory piece of hardware I could connect to my satellite box so I could wirelessly stream video from it to the TV would be great. And if they would sell the bluetooth remote Vizio makes for their bigger Internet App enabled TVs as an extra it would be nice. I think I saw a usb port on the back of the TV, so you could plugin a Bluetooth dongle.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
I was really looking forward to receiving this TV. Of al the 22" tv's this is the only one that had 1080p, led lighting, and the capability to connect to the internet. I had read some reviews that said the sound was bad, but I didn't care since I can't tell the difference between an LP and a CD. Unfortunately when I received this TV the first thing I noticed was how bad the sound was. When I turned off the "surround sound" setting it improved somewhat but it was still pretty bad. The picture was all washed out, it looked like an Insignia or Dynex brand TV I saw at Best Buy. It may be because it's contrast ratio is 50,000:1. I bought a Samsung LED 22inch that doesn't have all the features the Vizio had. The Samsung does have a beautiful picture and excellent sound. The Vizio was lacking an on/off timer which is good to have if you use this as a bedroom tv to help you wake up. The remote on the Vizio felt very cheap too.
The OSD menu was confusing to use on the Vizio. The Menu button had the same effect as pressing the Vizio Internet Application button. I think the set I got was defective. Amazon was great in processing the return, but if you buy it with the intention to try it out buy it directly from [...] since then you'll be able to take it to the store to return it.

Amazingly feature packed TV - not a great computer monitor,
By
This review is from: VIZIO M220NV 22-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black (Electronics)
This TV was temporarily on sale at a membership store for such an amazingly good price that I had to try it, thinking an LED-lit screen would give me better contrast for my photography work, with the TV features being a bonus.
It is a pretty amazing little TV - very good picture, wireless connectivity, tons of internet widget apps including my favorites: Netflix, HuluPlus, and Pandora. So what's the problem? Even though this TV has a "computer" setting, it's not really calibrated for the color space of a computer. I have it connected via HDMI to my MacBook Pro running in 1080p mode and despite running my color calibrator on it 10 times, and hours of manual tweaking, I simply cannot get the colors right. You might never notice this when watching TV or DVDs, but when surfing the web (and other computer activities) the blues/violets seem to be way too hot, but manually lowering them causes the other colors to shift. For semi-serious photography work, it's just not going to cut it and I'm going to have to return it. (One tip - turn off ALL the advanced video adjustment features and turn the sharpening all the way down - this gets you *almost* to the point of being a good computer monitor.) Other complaints: it has the WORST remote I have ever used. It feels super light and cheap. The high gloss finish instantly sucks all the oils out of your fingers, never to be wiped off again. The directional keys "bounce" like crazy - if you don't press them super quick, you end up getting 2 or 3 key presses, and the often-used "select" key is barely larger than a pencil eraser and is butted up (and flush with) the direction keys. If you have large fingers, forget about this remote - even with my slim fingers I have to use the tip of my finger to press the center key without hitting an arrow key. A great feature is the built in support for HuluPlus. BUT BE WARNED: unlike my Roku which will automatically find the right quality video stream for your internet bandwidth, this one defaults to the highest setting, and for me, that means it jitters so badly it's absolutely unwatchable. It wasn't until I was packing it up to return it that I noticed you can "arrow down" when the INFO screen is on and manually select the stream quality that best suits your connection. Honestly? Unfortunately, when I set it to the lower HD value (2MB connection) it still jittered a little bit on my 3MB internet connection. Setting it to SD+ (1MB) appears to have gotten rid of the jitters - it's no longer HD, but it seems a lot better than traditional SD. Now I'm torn whether to keep it and use it as a bedroom TV. So, if you want a good little, high feature TV at a good price, this TV is hard to beat (although the remote will drive you mad), but don't buy it if you want to use it as a color-accurate computer monitor... and beware of the need for a 6MB internet connection if you want to stream HD. |
