4.0 out of 5 stars Great VMWare starter book, April 5, 2007
By

This review is from: VMware Server and VMware Player. The way forward for Virtualization (Paperback)
I wanted to dive into virtualization very quickly. I immediately purchased this book based on other reviews, and wasn't disappointed. There are certain weaknesses though, the author's primary language is not english, which in some cases works out well (using simple language to describe technical scenerios) and other times its just distracting. The content is very good, but already somewhat outdated, with VMWare now having released Converter 3 as a free tool for single installs. I would have liked a more indepth explanation with scenerios (The why nat, bridge and host-only are used) of VMWare Server network handling, as this is one of the most important aspects of a proper production implementation. I recommend this book to anyone that needs a better understanding of what Virtualization is, and since VMWare is the market leader, this is where you should start.

Being new to VMware Server, I decided to purchase this book and it was money well spent. The dialogue keeps everything very simple and the information is very helpful. The book is pretty up to date and gives everyone (from novice to avid user) a great overview of the VMware Server platform (and VMware Player) and it is definitely worth checking out. Having seen Dennis Zimmer present at Virtualization events, he is a trusted and distinguished member of the virtualization community and his real world experience and technical prowess is documented in this book.

This review is from: VMware Server and VMware Player. The way forward for Virtualization (Paperback)
I have been working with VMware for about 5 years so my proficency is fairly high. When we started planning for a 'virtual server farm' I found I needed to go back a refresh my memory on some things plus learn more information on the new releases of VMware Server. I found many points I had forgotten and some new information that helped in the move to virtualization. While there is some 'tech' talk in the book it is written in a way that those wanting to learn about virtualization or just a refresher will find this book useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every VMware User, January 11, 2007
This review is from: VMware Server and VMware Player. The way forward for Virtualization (Paperback)
This is one of the best books available on the market for everyone working with any product of VMware. It is well suited for beginners giving a smooth and good introduction in the issues of virtualization in general and into all the products of VMware. But it also contains very advanced tips and tricks for advanced users and sample script files for specific tasks. The author has worked with VMware since the first release and has many years of experience as an integrator in smaller and large enterprises. There are also chapters about virtualization concepts, about how to choose the best infrastructure and how to create a suitable concept with checklists that you can use. The book is well written in a manner that is easy to understand. A must read for everyone working with VMware.
