I have this on my desk at all times. It acts as a great reference for using vSphere which can be cumbersome at times. The book takes a complex subject and makes it easy to understand. The index was unusually helpful unlike most tech books these days. When I needed to look up a topic I would look in the index and it would point me right where I needed to be.

I downloaded the PDF "ESX and Vcenter Server Installation Guide" but I needed more information. As background I'm bringing up a test of a cluster to run a web server and am using the trial VMware software. I had no VMware expereince.

Another IT person in my firm had gotten the VMWare cookbook

and found it to be less than useful. Normally I'd get an O'Reilly book, but forewarned I looked around Amazon and got this book instead. It has been by my side since then, and I've used it a lot. It helped me setup Vcenter Vserver and to create datacenter and cluster objects. In short, it was a great help in a real world case where I didn't have the budget or inclination to hire a consultant.

This is a great book for beginners. The book has all the quick reference material that you need instantly. It's an indispensible guide that "newbies" will appreciate. My copy is already dog-eared. The book will provide answers to basic vSphere 4 questions and encourage you to dive deeper into more advanced vSphere features. It's a great starter book for your library. After absorbing the information in this book you will be ready to explore in-depth, more technical resources.
