The phone does appear and install (and works) without the driver installed, however (the first reviewer stated this as well) the ringer is not that loud. UNLESS you install the driver software, then it is actually VERY loud. And also the buttons do not work on the phone until you install the driver (which integrates perfectly into XP and Skype).
When the Phone is disconnected, it will default back to your soundcard automatically, so if you get a call it will always work one way or the other. It has an LCD display which displays useful information (caller ID and length of call, and time date) but does NOT display unless the drivers are installed. So I suggest installing the drivers, even though the basic sound functions DO work without it.
Very economical and VERY GOOD deal.

This phone was recognized as an audio device by WinXP from the minute it was plugged in. I never did install the Skype helper software, because it just worked. Besides, these days I The sound is fine, though I wish the ringer were louder and the cord longer.

This would make a great present to someone who would enjoy free internet calling but is put by the headphones/mic config stuff.

In retrospect, I might have been happier with a USB headset because I don't really use the keys and screen, but this thing works and I have no regrets.

I got this phone hoping that it was going to work well with MagicJack (although I fully understand that it doesn't claim to be compatible with it); I have no need to use it for anything else, so my point of view is strictly related to that.

The good?
It's small, very portable and voice quality is ok. It's not uncomfortable and much better than the speaker/mic combination on your laptop for long conversations. The price is right.

The bad?
None of the keys work with MagicJack. Period. You have to use the soft phone to do everything and just use the handset to speak.
Also, the keys are extremely flimsy and you can tell that you're holding a cheap phone but you should expect that at this price.

So if you're a MagicJack user who is hoping for the right USB phone, this isn't it. In fact ideally I'd love to find a small corded phone for travel so that I didn't have to eat up one of my USB ports.
