4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
The phone is simple to set up and use. The sound on it is good. The answering machine works great. I have had no problems with the phone yet. I'm especially glad that it was a Christmas gift.

2.0 out of 5 stars keep looking...
This phone has a horrible sound quality - it is always hissing and fuzzy. The features are all pretty nice, except you can't get the phone book to go in alphabetical order - it is all in the random order you put the numbers in which is very inconvenient. The caller id was great, but the little screen-cover kept flopping off as soon as I started using the phone. I am...

1.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL!, November 9, 2002

This phone has horrible sound quality -- conversations are turned to "huh?", "what?"... after 8 months of wrangling with VTech, they finally sent me a 2468 model which is MUCH better sound quality. I wouldn't buy another 9161 if my life depended on it!

All I can say is that the phone has horrible sound quality and it is annoying to talk on it. Lots of crackles and hissing. I would highly recommend NOT buying this phone.

5.0 out of 5 stars almost 5 years old and still in use!, June 18, 2005
This review is from: VTech 9161 Analog 900 MHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Caller ID (Black) (Office Product)
Although I didn't purchase mine at Amazon, I have owned this phone and had no problems with it (even though I moved overseas and back with it). It worked great here, and it worked great in Trinidad. After 5 years of (ab)use, my only complaint is that the messages are becoming a little hard to hear. I'm replacing mine, but mostly because I want a smaller, "cuter" cordless phone. During its many moves this phone has shared lines with modems and DSL, and I haven't had any problems with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loud & Clear, October 29, 2003

Stumbled across this product as another VTech product was in the daily Gold Box offerings. I have had mine for well over one year now, and was surprised to see a few less than favorable reviews for this model. I have had absolutely no problems with mine here in Korea--and it shares the phone line with a DSL modem---and thus is filtered to allow data and voice--no problems at all with sound quality. Perhaps some with funny sound may want to try relocating the unit--that may help. Overall---for the price--I think you will be hard pressed to find a better value anywhere.

This phone is obviously a cheaply made product. It yet again proves that you usually get what you pay for.
