This review is for; Vtech - Brilliant Creations Advanced Notebook

My wife & I bought this for our young son to deter him from using our real laptop since he has a fondness for punching keyes and moving the mouse with his little fingers. Rated ages 5-8, I have to admit that I bought it for my son who is one to two years below that age group, but considering that the majority of laptops/notebooks sold for young children I've seen at local stores have monochrome LCD displays, this was the only notebook I saw that had vibrant colors that stood out over the rest. The VTech Brilliant Creations Notebook has a colorful 4.5" LCD display! An actual mouse is also included that is connected via a side port (appears to be a phone-jack type port that only accepts the included mouse & nothing else). An animated, talking Penguin appears frequently during most of the animated menus.

As advertised it has over 120 functions for young children as it claims although my child & I are still counting. Functions include learing ABC's with sounds (phonics)for each letter and not one, but two word examples for most letters are presented although some word examples seem odd. For example the letter "M" is represented by monkey which is OK (a cute, animated monkey that chirps appears) and mug (an animated person drinks from a mug). "Mug" hugh?

Other numerous functions include counting, basic math (addition & subtraction), memory exercises, matching exercises, story telling, reading, vocabulary, rhymes, synonyms & antonyms, filling in the blanks, letter spelling, science questions/learning, social studies, various games involving answering questions with letters or numbers, an art drawing screen that utilizes the mouse which can be saved in memory & some basic English-Spanish lessons (a little useful to my son since my family lives near a Hispanic neighborhood). All of the games & educational tasks have multiple levels of difficulty that can be adjusted as your child learns. There is also a "fun" button that does nothing more than execute about three different animation sequences with an animated penguin (so far my son's favorite button).

The unit runs on four AA batteries & there is a power jack for an AC adapter, but no AC power cord is included. Bummer, would have been better if a AC power cord & rechargeable battery would have been included like a real laptop. It is small enough to take on the road to keep my son busy during long road trips in the car, but I worry about leaving it in the car unattended since it almost looks like a real laptop/notebook when closed.

Despite the absence of a power cord, I still recommend this as my son so far is really having fun with it & most current laptops/notebooks for young children on the market lack the vibrant colors that the VTech Brilliant Creations Notebook has. I just hope there are more color laptops/notebooks for young children produced in the future as the plain monochrome, LCD diplays available now just don't cut it.

My 4 year daughter (just turned 4) wanted a more challenging laptop to play. So I spent hours researching online debating between laptops and tablet style options. This is what I wanted:

1) color screen

2) lots of challenging educational games, built-in (so I don't have to spend extra money buying cartridges)

3) big screen

4) thin, sleek design

5) QWERTY keyboard

6) a mouse

7) Under $50

Well not only does this V-Tech laptop satisfy all my requirements it has even more that I never considered.

8) excellent speakers

9) includes a built-in TOUCHPAD

10) mouse is detachable and optional (EXCELLENT mouse with realistic single-mouse click feel)

11) COMES with batteries!!

12) keyboard has a very realistic feel to it

13) very intuitive feel on how to choose games and options. A 4 year old can figure it out.

14) TONS of games under each category. The categories are: Story Book, Creativity Corner, Language World, Spanish Corner, Math Kingdom, Science Lab, Social Studies, and Brain Booster.

This laptop exceeded all my expectations. I would have purchased a tablet but the screen size for a tablet is a bit small and I would rather buy an iPad Mini than a kid tablet that needs extra cartridges for play. This laptop does not require any extra cartridges and has so many functions and games built in.

The manual says its recommended for ages 5~8 but I believe younger kids can play with this too. The new generation is born knowing how to use a mouse and keyboard. There's no need to wait until they are 5 to use this product. The graphics are quite colorful, a bit pixelated but it's $40. It's way better than our VTech Yo Gabba Gabba Learning Laptop!

Of course I would have given her one of my old laptops to play but she wanted something NEW and just for her. Well, this is it! And she can't crash this one!

I gave this to my son for Christmas. He seems to be really enjoying it, but only after we gave up on using the mouse. The plug has to be held in the port for the mouse to stay responsive. If you aren't pressing on the jack the mouse either won't work or the plug just falls out of the port. The touchpad is also tricky at first. You have to actually press down as you move your finger across it, unlike actual laptops where you only need to touch gently. Once he figured out the touchpad he has been having lots of fun on it. He can select and complete many of the activities on his own (he is 4 1/2).

My 4 year old and 2 year old are very pleased with these laptops. It is a product that they can both use currently and they can grow into the more advanced levels.

There are many, many learning activities, we really enjoy the Spanish, and missing letter activities right now.

One complaint is the color pages, it is preset to color related items the same color.

The screen has large pixels, but it doesn't seem to matter to my sons. This is the only color screen I was able to find on a kids toy laptop.

Kind of disappointed that it doesn't come with the AC power cord, but I'll purchase one because it gets lots of use and can eat through batteries fairly fast.

Received this product on time. Computer is great for ages 4 and up. My 4 yo. loves the matching game the best, then the games where you can dress up people, a penguin village, animals, etc. He'll learn more in a few months as he gets older like Spanish, math, letters, #'s, etc. He loves to get a trophy when he scores "100 points". He also likes the musical instruments he's learning about. He loves this toy! I'm glad I purchased it!

I bought 2 of them for for my grand kids ages 3 and 6, they love them and even take them when ridding in the car. I wish the information on the web would have included that you could purchase the adapter cord. I read the reviews before buying and there was complaints about the noise, I think that was one thing that kids really like.

This toy is fair, but the negative thing is that there are no math activities for kids older than 4 or 5. It would be best for kids in that age group.

I purchased this computer to give the grandkids an opportunity to learn how to use a computer and get educational value at the same time. The kids are 3 and 4 and ABSOLUTELY love this computer. There are so many levels of learning and also contains a great variety of subjects. They have even found and figured out how to use some of the sections of the computer that I didn't even know existed!!! I keep the computer at my house and they run right to it when they are here. A great value and durable. I can see the kids using this for a number of years as there are levels that get more difficult. BUY IT!! Also get the electric plug in cord.

We bought this for our 2 and a half year old for Christmas and she loves it. She plays with it almost daily, it's now April, and is able to navigate the menus by herself. It took about a week of me showing her how to use it and where her favorite games were before she got it. Some of the activities are too hard for her, but it is supposed to be for older kids. I think the age they rated it for is probably a little on the high side. I think it's probably best for 3/4 year old kids. The other ones we looked at seemed really babyish and I figured she would outgrow them within a year so we bought this one so she could use it longer. She knows all the letters and what sounds they make and can even read some basic words. She loves doing the painting and fruit smoothie game. She recently discovered the spanish menu and is starting to pick up some basic words from it. There are different levels of difficulty so you can pick what best suits your child. The only problem with the computer is that the mousepad on the laptop doesn't work, not a big deal since there is an attached mouse she can use. There is also no way to lower the volume which can get annoying, but my daughter likes it which is all that matters to me. There are a few educational games and there are some just for fun. Overall I think it's a great product and would recommend buying it to anyone with young children.

I bought this to get my son off my phone & it's games. The computer looks like a real laptop externally and my son was so excited. He is three years old and the games are largely too advanced for him yet. However, he already has much higher expectations of graphics. The pixels are enormous, which kids can forgive...except they could be spoiled already if they have access to Ipads or smart phones. I hope he will regain interest in this as he matures, but I'm not sure he will due to the lackluster screen/graphics.
Note, no power cord included, but there is a jack, so if you have one or buy one that would fix the issue so you don't have to rely on batteries.
