5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't ask for anything more! July 6, 2011

I bought this phone to go with a new VOIP service, and it works perfectly. The added benefits of the Bluetooth connectivity for two cell phones is awesome. When I get home, I turn off my BT headset, and when I walk into the house, by the time I get to the first handset in the kitchen, it is already connected. I use the second BT connection for friends when they visit and they love it! The Voice Announce Caller ID is flawless and a very nice feature. I used to have to remember to bring my cell phone into the bedroom at night when I am on-call for work, but now I can just leave it in the charger and the VTech rings if I get a call. I use voicemail, so I can't speak to the digital answering machine since I don't use it, but I'd have to bet it is as sweet as the rest of the features, like the handset to handset intercom and the many configurable settings like separate ringtones for each handset, and different ringtones for when the call is from a cell phone, plus other settings that I won't get into to keep this review from rambling too much more. Combine all that with the sleek, slim design, and very reasonable price, and you can't beat this phone for price / performance. As for the first reviewers negative comment about the sound quality, he needs to read the manual and change the audio setting. I found that to me it sounds best with the treble maxed and bass turned way down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost love... June 25, 2011

Update 8/24/2012: My review is over a year old. I'm leaving it up because people apparently still find it useful, but some of the drawbacks I noted reportedly have been fixed in later releases, such as the restrictions on push-to-talk and handset names. So, please read the comments from others as well as the review itself for the best information.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm using this system with 7 handsets, two iphones, and a "landline" (in quotes because it's really a Comcast line, i.e. sort of VOIP).

Pros:

Lots of interesting features, and they all seem to work. Great for a cell-only household, providing the opportunity for two or more people to share a call, each with their own handset. Especially useful if there's one great spot in your home for cell reception; just put your cell phones there, and make sure the base station is within ten or fifteen feet.

You can call out using the landline or either of two cell phones. If two are connected, you must choose one for each call; I would have preferred a default setting.

Intercom calling is excellent, with a "call all" function that lets you call without knowing where in the house the other person is.

Cons:

With all their hype about "HD" and crystal clear reception, I expected better. Callers sound soft and fuzzy, which is good in a teddy bear but not in a phone.

Some important features don't work with all the handsets. Push-to-talk, for instance, works only on your first four handsets. This information is hidden away until after you buy, which is, IMO, highly deceptive.

Handset names can only be four characters, a silly restriction that leads to convoluted abbreviations.

Although it looks like the big round thing on the handset is a four way rocker with a center button, it's not. It's just an up-or-down switch. The center "button" is a dead space. So, when you've selected what you want you have to go to a soft-key labeled SELECT to activate it. Very counter-intuitive poor design, and making it look like a standard four-way again seems deceptive. Maybe I'll get used to it.

Summary:

There's no perfect cordless / bluetooth system. This one's a keeper, but I'm not loving it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good System October 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this VTech DS6421-3 System with 2 additional handsets (5 total), after I decided to ditch the land line and keep only my iPhone. I have been using them for over a month now.

Overall, this system works as advertised. The set up was easy, as was pairing it up with my iPhone via Bluetooth. Now after getting home I'd just have my iPhone recharging on a desk where there is good cell signal and on which the VTech base set is also placed. I no longer have to carry my cell phone around the house or rush to it when a call comes - can just pick up a handset nearest me. It's also nice that every handset will speak of the caller's ID so you know who is calling.

Main complains (or what could be better):

1. Poor sound volume - as pointed out by some reviewers, the sound volume from each and every one of the handsets is very low - I have to set all of them to the max level to get decent (but still low) sound, and I can assure you that it is not due to my hearing. Also, there are no buttons on the side of the handset for adjusting sound volume while using it.

2. No speaker phone - the "speaker" key on the lower-left corner of keypad does not work in normal phone use - you have to use the handset on your ear. This is puzzling and stupid because each handset has a (loud) speaker for intercom and for announcing caller ID. Maybe this can be easily fixed by revising the software to allow phone dialing and answering after the "speaker" key is pressed.

3. Speaking of software - it's poorly written and non-intuitive, and its "information sharing" with my iPhone is a joke. So don't expect too much there. Also, the shiny ring below the screen is for moving menu item highlight up and down only, not left and right at all. The black round button in the center is a dead spacer rather than a "select" button as one would normally expect.

4. Cheap and flimsy - while looking O.K., every piece of the phone system feels light and flimsy as if the ultimate goal in design was to use as little material as possible. The base for individual handsets is just a cheap piece of plastic that if you're not careful putting the handset back on the whole thing will flop down. The keys also feel cheap to the touch.
