Kids love toys that enable them to emulate you. Hunter-gatherer children learn to hunt and gather by playing games that simulate their parents' main activities. When I grew up, girls played with dolls and tea sets while boys played with guns. Our mothers raised children and entertained from their kitchens while our fathers made the world safe for democracy from the business end of weaponry.
Today's kids grow up getting Latte's instead of ice cream cones as rewards and they watch their parents interact with digital intelligence. Can you wonder why giving one of them a toy computer keeps them busy and delighted for hours on end? The unit is sturdy and attractive, especially for the feminine side. It has just enough variety of application to keep the user fascinated. Think about that. You have a much more sophisticated notebook, but how many applications do you actually use over and over again? I made one mistake when I bought this for my granddaughter who is just beginning kindergarten. I should have bought two of them, because her three year old sister is way too left out when it's face to the screen time. This is a toy meant for personal interaction. It can't be shared like a television or a play station. The user will ignore all around them as she becomes engrossed (sound familiar?) So, if you have more than one preschooler, you're better off with more than one VTech Nitro.

I got this notebook as a gift for my daughter's 4th birthday. She likes it a lot and spends time with it for quite a long stretch. I find it as a very educational, fun learning tool for budding learners. Good one.

The software is so very 1980's that it's laughable (until the screaming starts) when you realize as the unit barks commands at you that you cannot mute it: you have 2 levels of volume control- Loud and a Little Less Loud but still freakin' annoying. I wanted to give my very bright little 4 year old daughter her own "little computer" to play with. She has fun on Daddy's big computer and with very little help can point and click with the mouse and is learning to use the arrow keys to manipulate cute characters on age appropriate web sites (Mickey Mouse Club House,etc..) and in K-1st grade software on our hardrive. I thought this product might get her OFF my comp and engaged and learning but alas... It was not to be. The unit LOOKS good but do NOT be fooled as I was!

I must say- if it were not for the fact that my daughter specifically asked for this I would never have bought this.
But it's cute and it keeps her occupied. I did not realize from the description that it took extra cartridges to do different games. Granted it did come with two carts, but I'm not a big fan of having to buy carts to play keep their interest. That is my biggest complaint.

a good kids computer for the price,

I read the other reviews and they listed complaints that you are going to find on any kids computer. The screens are darker and small...they ALL are. So far my 6 year old daughter really likes the computer and so do I. The voice guy is really nice and encouraging, and honestly that is more then I can say for other kids computers I have owned. The lap top itself is nice and sleek, my daughter was so excited because it looks like a "big girl" computer and not the "baby" one, her 3 year old brother has (also a v-tech...the tote 'n go lap top.) The computer is wonderful for what we bought it for....long car rides. She only uses it then so, she does not get tired of it. Overall I am very happy with my buy and grateful that I found something educational and not a gaming system.

I was so disappointed in this "laptop" as was my 5 year old daughter on Christmas morning after she opened it. It is hardly anything close to a laptop, except that it is in the housingo f a mock laptop. The screen is so small you can hardly view it, it is not lit up so you have to be in bright light to even view the elements on the screen, lousy sound, confusing games. Overall just very antiquated, its like going back to the old apple computers of the 80s. She has played with it maybe a total of 10 minutes since december. I would send it back but the shipping is not even worth it.

We sat down to write a disappointing review about this product...but we didn't have to. Jared Binder's review already had everything we would have written. Yes, it was cheap...but a lot of computer items are very affordable now. When we turned on the computer, this tiny little display came up in the middle of the "screen" displaying software that we thought no longer existed. For an intelligent 4 year old, your money would be better spent on low end desktop computer.

I purchased this computer for my 6 year old. She was very excited to receive it for Christmas. With all of her other gifts, though, she has played with this computer only several times since she received it. But when she does play with it, she plays for a long time. She loves the Progress Report which lets her know how well she's done. It's an excellent educational tool and lots of fun. The only problem I have with this computer is that the screen does not have a backlight which makes it very difficult to use when there is not adequate lighting such as in the car. Vtech should work on that to improve the product. Overall, I think it's an excellent product for the money.

Small screen, cheap graphics and when you have a problem to solve calling tech support what you get is a poorly trained staff from Philippines that will not help. In other words CRAP not worth the money.
