I bought this for my son who is a young 2. He's a very busy little boy and gets bored easily of most toys. This set was easy to assemble, seems pretty durable, and is really cute. My son engaged in it quickly and has played with this toy longer than I've ever seen him play with any of his others.
As another reviewer wrote, there is a hill that requires you to hand crank - my son picked up on this pretty quickly and it has added that much more interest to his play. The way the the track configures you can choose to send the train up the hill or under the tunnel, so if your child can't hand crank yet, don't worry they can still use this toy and have time to grow into it.
My son loves that the train moves on it's own, it's different than the other push trains he has. He does at times try to push it, it's held up so far, but I hope this doesn't break it. The other Go Go Smart Wheels sets can attach to this set, and there are lots of different ways to assemble for lots of variation and fun!
The reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 (really minimal in the scheme of things) is that the track configurations are kind of tricky. They give you a cheat sheet on how and where pieces go. At this point I can't use all the pieces without using their sheet. Now the dilemma we have is that the sheet has been misplaced. In my chaotic world of a 2 year old, this seems to happen a lot - you think I would have figured out a better system or safer place by now, but I haven't. I went to V-tech's site but can't find a downloadable manual online. I did email them so I'm hoping that I will get another chance to find a safer home for this guide and prove myself responsible.

I think my 2-year-old had the most fun with the Vtech Go! Go! Smart Wheels Train Station. Where my 5-year-old was all about building the track and putting it together, my 2-year-old wanted to watch the train go around the track. She like watching the lights and listening to the train talk. She loved to help the train up the hill. She sat forever watching it go around and around and then helped it up the hill. She like to make the gates go up and down. When the train would hit the gate it would tell her to lift the gate and that is what she did.
Of course the baby loved the track, but he is still a bit young for it. He like taking it apart and putting the track right into his mouth. The track parts are nice and big and built well enough that I wasn't worried about him playing with his older siblings. We just made sure to keep the train away from him since it had smaller wheels. The buttons are nice and large. The kids loved to listen to the clock tower. I kinda wish I had a mute button :) But I am glad that they enjoyed it so much!
Having a toy that all three kids could play with at once is great! It's nice as a mom that there is a toy they can play with that I don't have to say "Don't let your bother get that" or " You all need to share or I'm taking it away" The track was big enough that they were all able to sit around it and have a good time. Because there are so many different ways to build this track, they never get bored with it. It's fun trying a new set up and playing with little figures around the track.

I've read several reviews where the customer couldn't figure out a how to build a track that uses all the pieces included in the set. I believe that I've found a solution and posted pictures in the customer photo upload area. My layout uses all the pieces, and it also enables the train to complete a circuit around the track and hit all of the SmartPoints without manual intervention.

I have a 3 year-old son who loves this train. He is able to turn the crank to help the train up the ramp just fine. The train is able to turn corners, and does not get stuck on any track pieces (maybe other reviewers got lemons?). I think that this set is well worth the price, and is a lot of fun to build.

I don't think that a 1-2 year old would be able to build the tracks, but they would probably have fun pushing the train around the track or watching it move on its own. It is possible to disengage the motor by pushing the button in the smokestack (therefore making it a push toy). Similarly, if your train isn't moving, push the button again to re-engage the motor to have the train run the tracks on its own.

My 3 year-old doesn't have the patience to put together the track on his own yet, but I'm hoping that he will when he gets older.

My only criticisms of this set are that the instructions could provide better diagrams for the various track configurations, and that they should include a few more red curved directional pieces (the ones that insert into the orange cross track pieces). The diagrams for the track layouts are a bit difficult to read, and the photos included in the manual are way too small to see all the details. Even so, it's not rocket science to figure out how to build a track configuration that will work.
