Vtech V.Reader Interactive E-Reading System
This storyteller learning system brings books to life and makes reading vivid and fun for your child.
Make Reading an Interactive Experience

Your child will enjoy the V.Reader right from the start, with stories that come alive through interactive graphics, written words, and a narrator that reads the story out loud. The toy comes with enough tokens to download three books from the Internet, so your child can begin to discover the written word right away.

Encourage Learning with Exciting Games

The toy also keeps your child engaged with educational reading games, such as the Rhyme Time word-matching activity, What Happened? mystery game, and Hello! Hola! Bonjour! language lab. Each book comes with its own games that encourage reading comprehension, phonics, word building, and many other skills. The toy has its own activities that keep your young one entertained, including a coloring book, photo album, and writing practice games.

A story dictionary in each book helps your child get the most out of reading time. Develop your young one's vocabulary by going through the story dictionary together. A progress log helps you and your child track growth in all the activities and games. When the toy is connected to your computer, your child can receive certificates of achievement as he or she improves.

Vtech Tote and Go Laptop
Expand Your Child's Collection with Download Options

As your child grows in ability, the V.Reader can grow too. A cartridge reader allows you to purchase copies of stories and games, and an included USB cable connects the device to your computer so you can download more exciting games and books. In order to store more books on your V.Reader, you will need to purchase a separate SD card .

Durable Reader Features Kid-Friendly Design

With a 3.5-inch colorful touch screen, easy-access buttons, and a full keyboard, the V.Reader offers full functionality. The touch screen works effectively with either a stylus or fingers. Our testers found that the letter buttons are small and take getting used to, but there are not many games that require them.

A cover closes over the front to keep the buttons and touch screen safe when the toy is not in use. Your child can also listen to stories through headphones, making it a great toy for the car or quiet time.

What's in the Box

V.Reader Interactive e-reader, What's That Noise? storybook, user manual, USB cable, stylus, and six tokens.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
When we opened up and started exploring the V.Reader, it was one of those wow moments. It was a mini Kindle that combines all the educational reading strategies that children need to have to become effective readers. If you are planning to give this as a gift, purchase four 4 "AA" batteries and a 2GB SD card as they aren't included. You'll also need a small flat head screwdriver to open the SD card cover. If you want, you can purchase a V.Tech 9 volt power adaptor if you don't want to go through a lot of batteries. There is also a V.Reader and MobiGo car charger available for a very reasonable price for families that are on the go frequently or are going on a trip. Not to be outdone by the Kindle, they also offer a tote for additional protection of the V.Reader.

This is what comes on the reader without any cartridges:

Story Dictionary

The story dictionary is set up alphabetically. It can be accessed separately or right from the story via active, visual, oral, written definition of words. It also includes characters in the books. For example when a child looks up the name Rufus, we see a snoring dog, read his name, and read and listen to: "Rufus is a country dog who moved to the city with his family." If the name Rufus (in bold blue) is touched again the definition will be repeated. The more difficult vocabulary words are highlighted. The stories and games are interactive and fun. There is a light musical background and a woman reading the story.

The reading games encourage listening, careful reading, and make a child think. When a game is in progress or completed a child will be encouraged if he or she is successful when they hear "well done" or "you've got them all ..." The option to play again comes up when it is done. If a certain concept isn't mastered children have the opportunity to go back and work through a problem and improve. Certificates are also offered when a book is finished or a game is successfully completed. There is an icon that can be tapped to see them.

Downloadable books are reasonably priced, but the cartridges are a bit more pricey. At this point in time, the materials are set up for the three- to seven-year-old child. The materials are age appropriate and the titles available are of high interest. For example, we see story characters such as Dora the Explorer, Scooby Doo, Disney stories, and some classics such as The Little Engine That Could. Reading skills I can see include everything from letters to reading comprehension. Vtech seems to have done their research and I like what I see. The only thing you'll have to keep in mind is the additional expense of the cartridges, but education does come at a cost. This is F-U-N and an excellent way to motivate your young reader. This is an excellent tool for the homeschool set or a group tool for preschoolers or the lower grades.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed- another V learning toy. September 8, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
It's about time they make a new V-whatever learning device! It's been at least 5 days!

This is one of those products I didn't really want to get, but since it was through the Vine program, I didn't have much to lose. My daughter's been through several of the other Vtech game systems, but always lost interest after a few weeks. While Vtech makes some good devices here and there, I can't help but wonder what they could do if they stopped making new formats for even a year, and focused on the others that are already out, or just went with one 'ultimate' device that truly is worth your money.

The best thing about the V.Reader is that it's easy to use and works great. The screen displays things perfectly, animations are better than I expected, and the button format is perfect for my daughter to use. Audio is crisp and clear as well. Durability is 50/50 since it's sturdy for the most part, but one short fall on a hard floor and this thing will be toast. There's a decent selection of games at the moment, and I'm sure there will be many more by the end of the year, just in time for Chr...I mean, 'the holiday season'.

But there are some pretty big cons that keep this from being a solid purchase. First up, the batteries don't last more than a few hours, even with the volume low. I recommend getting some rechargeable batteries for this if your child really likes it, as buying 4 AA batteries on a regular basis is a chore. You can always get an AC adapter too if you'd like (you'd think that one would've been included, right?). An SD card is also needed if you plan on doing more than the sheer basics with the V.Reader, so there's more money you're pretty much required to spend on this thing. And as usual, no game was included with this. From what I've seen, the games for the V.Reader are overpriced considering how short they tend to be. My other complaint is that the touchscreen could be more sensitive. It's not terrible but needs improving.

In the end, with the cost of the V.Reader, SD card, batteries and just one game, you're going to be spending at least one Benjamin on everything. Unless your child runs over to try this out at the store all the time, I'd suggest getting something else, as it's a bit pricey to buy everything if they're going to lose interest after a while. My daughter's gotten much more out of educational games on my iPod, most of which were free(!), and she's -always- going for it, whereas the V.Reader hasn't been used in at least a week now, and we've had it for 3 weeks. If you already have one of the many Vtech learning systems and your children like it, keep buying games for it and ignore this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warranty; warranty; where's the warranty? October 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars
If you are like me, you try find as much information as possible before making a purchase. I wanted to buy this for my grand-daughter's 3rd birthday, but I couldn't find out exactly what type of warranty the V Reader had. I even went to the VTech site and called the number that they had listed. If you are interested, the number is (800) 521-2010. You will find yourself connected to India (probably) and speaking with "Peggy". =] The only information she gave me, with her very heavy accent, was that the warranty would be "listed on a paper inside the box". Thanks "Peggy". Not.

I did buy the V Reader. I will write another review once my grand-daughter has had a good opportunity to use it, but here's what I found out about the warranty:
~The V Reader has a 1 year warranty that covers defective workmanship & materials.
(all vtech toys have 1 year warranty)
~Software support is only actually warrantied for 90 days.
~It is not covered for damage, wear & tear, etc that comes from misuse (no surprise here).
(It seems pretty sturdy and should hold up if reasonable care is used.)
~You MUST keep up with the RECEIPT, and my suggestion is to keep the box, too.
~You MUST register it online when you get it.

Again, I will leave a review on the usability, etc once I see my grand-daughter use it, but it seems sturdily built and a good value for the price. I'll let you know...

I compared this to:
InnoTab Interactive Learning Tablet, from Vtech
LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet, from LeapFrog
MobiGo Touch Learning System, from Vtech
LeapFrog Leapster Explorer Learning Game System, from LeapFrog
LeapFrog Text and Learn, from LeapFrog
iXL 6-in-1 Learning System, from Fisher-Price
My First Story Reader, from Baby Einstein
among several others
