Pits one man's determination to stay alive against all the elements of nature conspiring against him!

If a man can cut off his own arm to survive, then it is not surprising that a man would/could kill a dog to survive.
Athina
Also, they are tastefully done so that all members of the family can watch them - no really gross stuff.

This is probably....rather, easily The. Best. Episode. Ever. Period. Exclamation Point. I have seen every single episode of I Shouldn't Be Alive, and there are a few standouts (Lost In The Snow, A Walk Into Hell) and this was probably the most mind boggling. I mean a single man surviving 76 days in the biggest desert of them all...the Ocean. Survival at its finest. I am so glad they brought this show back and support the next season by giving me a thumbs up! Bravo Animal Planet for being surprisingly human. I do not want to spoil it but if you are going to buy a single episode from this season, buy this one!

I think some people have been unfair about this show.

First of all, there is a warning at the beginning of the show about disturbing content and viewer discretion advisory.

Secondly, the show is not about our average peaceful daily life. When our life takes a dramatic turn into a hellish experience, starvation, dehydration, desperation among other things will kick us into extreme survival mode. Honestly, between my life and my family's, I can see why I will give up mine, but I'm not so sure when between mine and my dog or any other animal.

Lastly, the show is excellent in depicting the physical and psychological impacts under extreme circumstances. And yes, this is flaws in this shows too.

Steve Callahan's drift across the Atlantic is the best ISBA ever (and I have seen all of them). Although not totally accurate and consistent with his book, the video is great. I highly recommend.

This episode is a perfect example of how to find inner strength, and how to use it when your mind and body both tell you to just lay down and die. It also embodies a strong lesson about how precious one single life is... even if it was trapped alone in a crevasse...The thoughts that went through this man's head at the bottom of the crevasse (and halfway up), saved his life and I will never forget this. Your mind can save you or it can kill you.

I too, was horrifed that the man decided to eat his dog-however, one only knows what one would do , if they were actually in that situation. Of course it's easy to say "I would never do that"-that is until you are in a TRUE SURVIVAL SITUATION. If a man can cut off his own arm to survive, then it is not surprising that a man would/could kill a dog to survive. He didn't expect to vomit up the dog- he expected it could save his life. Everything changes when you are in that situation- I am certain of that. The will to live is stronger than anything, and I think what he did was courageous. His experience was awful, was almost murdered, almost drowned, lost his boat, got malaria, had no food. and I'm sure every time he thinks of killing that dog, he is traumatized. When it comes to survival, we become more primitive, and resort to primitive means of survival.

The real life stories demonstrate human fallibility. There's many lessons oin living among these stories. The are well recreated and the people involved also comment on what they did and the profound threat of their predicament. I really appreciate people telling their own stories. I realize the telling isn't as smooth as a studio movie production and that ads to the reality of the frightening adventure. The endings are sometimes bitter sweet, while the alive survivor suffers some true losses some may find these stories hard to watch.

It is incredible how strong we can become in very difficult situations. Also, it's incredible how many times we don't think things through and put ourselves in possible deathly situations.
