Holds a Good Vacuum, but be Careful with Whole Beans!,

This is a heavy-duty, almost well-designed storage container that can hold a good vacuum for several weeks without repumping. Of course, in normal use, you will likely be opening and re-pumping your container once a day to make morning coffee. Unfortunately, the container has one serious design defect that prevents me from awarding five stars. Surface oil from whole coffee beans will quickly mar the interior plastic surface. When I told the company about this problem, I was astonished to learn that these containers are not designed for storing whole beans, only ground coffee! What's strange about this response? First, neither the product description on amazon.com nor the product box discloses the requirement to store only ground coffee. Second, most people who would bother to buy this container and pump it up each day are true coffee lovers who would never purchase pre-ground beans. My workable solution: line the interior of the container with heavy-duty aluminum foil to prevent any contact with oily coffee beans. Works like a charm, and my coffee tastes great!

I bought two of these to store two different kinds of coffee beans. They stack well, but if you bump the valve when you're removing or replacing a container on the shelf, it will open and let in some air. After a while, they don't hold their seal as well; if you wash them with warm soapy water, it seems to revive them, but only for a week or so.
I use the larger pump that comes with them on my Vacu Vin wine stoppers - it pumps faster.

It works,

It works good but you have to play with it & check it daily. Seems to store lunch meat good despite some reporting implosions when you put it in the fridge. My solution to that: Put Vacu vin in fridge for several hours separately FIRST to get it cold then, put in food & then make your 'vacuum'-works for me.You might have to use a 'screwing motion, to tighten it also. Also ,taking rubber stopper off of it first makes taking top off easier !

for storing coffee (or other perishables) these really are great. I have used other storage containers (most recently, those made by Oxo - not inexpensive, and despite the impressive lids, not airtight) and these seem the be the best. They can be a bit of a chore to pump - it is much easier to pump out a wine bottle! And this is why I give them only 4 stars. They are just too big. I buy coffee freshly roasted, typically in 1/2 pound lots. There is already a lot of extra space in the containers with this amount of coffee, only getting larger as I use the coffee from day to day. Lots and lots of pumping. I think a 0.9 liter or 0.7 liter would be ideal (or a pump with a larger barrel, hence fewer pumps needed to create the vacuum). Also, the lids fit on in a slightly tricky way, so it is important to make sure you have it just right. But, my coffee stays really fresh, with no discernible coffee odor leaking out of the container (unlike OXO) and so I would say this is a great product that could use a little tweaking. On a purely cosmetic note, different colors would be nice - that would help in differentiating which coffee is which - perhaps different colored lids could be offered. They do seem to be very solidly made, good heavy materials, so they should last a long time, which is only fair given the price.

I liked the old style canisters that were produced. The new canister is hard to grasp and they feel clumsy when handling them. Also, my old pump works with the new snout, but I cannot tell if the seal is vacuum tight. I hope they decide to return to the old straight canister soon.

Good Idea - Needs better seal,

After pumping out the air it seems like it's done but Sometimes air sneaks back in is seal had a leak. This can be avoided if plastic cover is washed or wiped with a damp cloth.

This product depends upon its being airtight which in turn is dependent on the quality of the rubber seal. When the container is evacuated using the Vacu Vin pump, no air should enter the container. Unfortunately, the seal stopped working only five months after I bought the Coffee Vacuum Saver. I have done everything I can think of short of glueing it to make it keep a vacuum. Now it is just a nice plastic container that is not airtight and does not protect the coffee from oxidation. Don't waste your money.

I buy coffee beans by the pound and grind them each time I make coffee. With a few pumps each time, the beans stay fresh.

I bought this after finally getting a quality coffee grinder for my espresso machine. I store my beans whole and after doing a bit of research I learned that freezing beans is not a good idea and the only way to keep them fresh is to vacuum seal them and keep them dry and out of the light. I was a little unsure about buying this based on some of the reviews but I went for it because I hate throwing away plastic and my only other option was disposable vacuum seal bags.I have had two of these containers for three months now and they work great for me. I haven't had to apply mineral oil or anything else to the container and it seals great everytime. I've left the containers untouched for over a week and they have never lost their vacuum. I've only had one occasion where it wasn't sealing while I was pumping the air out. I simply pulled the lid off and reset it on the container and it was fine. The only suggestion I can offer is when you initially begin to pump, do it quickly for the first four or five pumps to create the initial seal then you can pump at your leasure until you get all the air out. Also, I was a little confused how to release the vacuum to open the container the first time I used it. To me the instructions looked like you press down on the small rubber nub in the middle of the lid. In reality you need to push the nub sideways to release the vacuum. I absolutely love popping the lid off this thing and getting a blast of fresh coffee smell in my face everytime, this container works great! |
