Editorial Reviews

- The debut solo album from Vadym Kholodenko, the 2013 Van Cliburn competition winner: one of the world's handful of most prestigious piano contests - Comparatively rare, yet supremely classy repertoire by two composers from Russia's 'golden age' of piano composition - Technically brilliant, yet soulfully deep interpretations - 'the 27yearold Ukrainian pianist put on pretty amazing display of virtuosity - and...musical depth...' - Dallas News

I've been following the career of this extraordinary young artists for a few years now, first hearing him in Moscow and then at a very special concert at Carnegie Hall on December 12th, 2012 when the Ministry of Culture of the CIS countries presented 7 outstanding young soloists at Carnegie Hall with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Constantine Orbelian. Maestro Orbelian decided to give this concert as a gift to New Yorkers in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. It was an evening to remember and Vadym Kholodenko an outstanding Ukrainian performed the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1. I was thrilled to follow his performances round after round at the Van Cliburn during the summer of 2013. This recording of Rachmaninov and Medtner is outstanding in every respect. I hope that we true music lovers will be able to hear a more of this wonderful artist on the DELOS label.

I became an instant fan of Kholodenko following his first appearance in Greenville SC with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. Clearly at his most comfortable behind the piano, Kholodenko is equally at ease amid the most lush romantic and most precise baroque, giving each his special ability to dissect and reproduce the important elements and themes, all the while maintaining crystal clarity in his playing. This effort allows us to see the inner romantic in him, and his playing is restrained but remains bold and clear, the work of a very mature musician. Kholodenko eschews any attempt at mere showmanship and bravura, choosing instead to deliver up the music like the rare treat it should be, with reveal after reveal. This disc is in my permanent rotation, one of the few that ever make the cut.
