Biography

Joseph Arthur (Akron, OH, 1971) had already been writing songs and playing music as a child. At the tender age of 16 he was the bass player for Frankie Starr and the Chill Factor which broke up in 1990, but fate was kind to Arthur a few years later when while working in a guitar shop in Georgia he was discovered by none other than Peter Gabriel.
Gabriel was impressed enough with Arthur's first… Read more in Amazon's Joseph Arthur Store

Editorial Reviews

Vagabond Skies is an EP from singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Joseph Arthur. The six song EP is the third in a series of four EPs to be released in anticipation for the release of Joseph's seventh studio album Temporary People on September 16, 2008. Vagabond Skies, according to Joseph, will be "more stripped-down, more acoustic and slower...it's more of a late-night type of music." The EP also marks the first studio recording of "She Paints Me Gold," a song Joseph has often played at his live shows since November 2004.

Joseph Arthur is phenomenal, June 9, 2009
By Cheryl J. Blodgett - See all my reviews

I heard a cut on a local station, totally perked up, and waited to hear who it was. I had never heard of Joseph Arthur. I immediately ordered "Nuclear Daydream", "Could We Survive" and "Vagabond Skies". My husband and I keep playing all three. The music is exciting, moody, and cool. Joseph Arthur's voice is mellow, warmly raspy and resonates right through you. His lyrics are esoteric and provocative...and cool. We are so excited to have "discovered" him.

So, this is the 3rd in a series of 4 EPs leading up to the release of a full-length album in the fall.

Why? Why so many releases in such a short time?

Well, it's an attempt to challenge the idea of what is considered prolific. For many singer-songwriters it is considered quite prolific to put out maybe 1 album in a year with maybe 12 or 14 songs on the whole album. Is that really a lot of music?

Joseph Arthur is attempting to see what happens when he just focuses on writing and recording music without worrying about the usual lag and downtime for promotion between releases.

This 3rd EP in the series is much more stripped down and rough than the first two. Is that due to a distinct artistic choice? Or is it a matter of who could make it into the studio during the time they had to record?

The 4th EP lists Arthur as the only musician. Again a matter of nobody else having the time to record? Or is this series of EPs a way to distill Joseph Arthur's music down to Joseph Arthur, as himself?

Definitely a worthy musical experiment. Oh yeah, and I'd recommend ordering from Joseph Arthur's own website and getting the print of one of his paintings along with the CD.
