Editorial Reviews

Originally released in 1989 on the Island Records label, No Respect was the debut from this California quintet originally from the Bay Area. The band consisted of Davy Vain on vocals, Danny West and James Scott on guitars, Ashley Mitchell on bass and Tom Rickard on drums. Produced by Paul Northfield, assisted by Davy Vain. Vain, along with Jetboy and the Sea Hags, helped solidify the San Francisco Metal scene. Contemporaries included Metallica, Exodus and Death Angel (who Davy Vain produced). BGO. 2009.

I somehow missed this band when they came out in the 80's, even though it seems I have almost everything from that era. So I bought this based on the reviews from you all posted here. I was not disappointed! This is a very straight forward CD, although the vocals seem to be mixed much louder than the background instruments. This is not necessarily bad, as the vocalist is very good. For those of you really wanting to know what this band sounds like.....I would say a West Coast version of Tuff Luck (sorry if you don't know that band, but no other really sounds close to these guys). Maybe a touch of "Killer Dwarfs" thrown in for good measure. Although many of the reveiws here (as well as in the CD booklet) claim these guys as "harder than their peers" or "less refined" or "rougher around the edges", I did not think so. It's just a slightly different sound from the stuff that was being put out in L.A. at the time. Enjoy.

I first heard about Davy Vain from the band Death Angel. He produced their incredible "Frolic through the Park" album, and after a show in Cincinnati, DA guitarist Rob Cavestany told me that I would be floored when "No Respect" hit the streets. He wasn't kidding.

To call Vain "glam" really doesn't do them justice. From a strict musical standpoint, they were far more talented and diverse than most of the metal bands who were around in the late 1980s. They weren't gimmicky, which probably contributed to their lack of record sales. If they had simplified it a bit, like maybe Warrant or Britny Fox for example, they probably would have sold millions of records. They were too good for their own good. And their live show was outstanding, too.

The only negative thing about "No Respect" is the occasionally cheesy lyrics. To this day, I can't listen to the chorus of "Aces" without laughing.

I still have an original copy of this on CD (vinyl, too), and I listen to it at least every couple of weeks. It has definitely stood the test of time.

This band came out just a little too late. I bought this cd in 88 when it came out and with all the other glam bands that were out at the time there seemed no room for Vain. I have been listening to this disc for 18 years solid. Too many stand out tracks on this disc to mention, no filler here. If you like your metal raw and sleazy, definitly for you. Buy, Listen and Enjoy.

This is Glam/Heavy Metal of the 80's. I lived it and enjoyed it. This CD, "No Respect", will give you that get crazy, have fun with all who dare, rock will live forever type feelings all fellow rockers share. From the first song to the very last. Davy Vain (on vocals) has a sensual sexy voice you would die for. Dont leave out Danny West-Guitar, James Scott-Guitar, Tom Rickard-Drums, and Ashley Mitchell-Bass because these guys complete the 5 men needed to relive the Hard Rockin', Head Bangin', once and for all Heavy Metal Rules kinda life of a devoted Rocker. I have the original CD and paid alot more, with no regrets. However, for the price they are requesting for this remastered version, you can't go wrong. If you are a rocker, you will buy it, you will play it and love it loud.

Vain is the best band to get lost in the shuffle of the late 80's glam/metal/hairband era and No Respect is a classic. The songwriting and playing is phenomenal and this record is both deep and lasting - particularly "Beat the Bullet," "Who's Watching You," and "1000 Degrees." It is criminal that Vain never got the exposure or commercial success that so many other less talented bands from those years enjoyed (including the giants like Motley). Do yourself a favor - buy this record and enjoy a lost treasure. On a side note, despite having never had that breakout success, Vain is still releasing great music 15+ years later.

Vain was one of those bands in the '80s you might have missed because there were so many bands out at that time! Their first release was an excellent debut, and if it received the attention it should have it would have been a major seller. No "filler" material here, just a great mix of hard rock songs with a couple of really good power ballads thrown in for a good balance. If you love Dokken, Ratt, Motley Crue or any other '80s bands like those then I suggest you pick up a copy of this. You won't be disappointed!!

Sure glad that I have the available room to store old CD's and lp's. Also glad that I rarely discard anything of such. I remember seeing Vain play a late gig in a club on the same night that Motley Crue was in town during their 'Dr. Feelgood' tour. That's how long it's been. I didn't realize that years later, Vain had released two other CD's, '94's 'Move On It' and '95's 'Fade'. I'll have to check those out sometime. Anyway, I always thought Vain would stick around longer than they originally did after the release of 'No Respect'. Overall, just good glam rock & roll with a kick to it. Happening cuts were "Beat The Bullet", "Who's Watching You", "Laws Against Love" and their love song (well sort of) "Icy". Line-up: Davy Vain - vocals, Danny West & James Scott - guitars, Ashley Mitchell - bass and Tom Rickard - drums. Should appeal to fans of Diamond Rexx, L. A. Guns, Roxx Gang, Dangerous Toys and Hanoi Rocks.
