REVIEW OF A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, June 10, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Vaino: A Boy of New Finland (Hardcover)
Vaino Lundborg is a Finnish boy living in 1916. The Finnish are fighting for their freedom and something exciting is always happening. When something exciting does happen, when Vaino is told to take care of his widow mother, or during family time, Vaino's mother, Fru Lundborg, tells the family a Finnish legend of Vaino's namesake, Vainomoinen. Vainomoinen outsings the best, loses his fiance (who commits suicide) and has a friend, Ilmarinen who forges an evil Sampo.
Most of the book does not take place in the legends, though, but after Finland declares its freedom. Even though Finland declares its freedom, there is still a revolution to be won. Will the war ever end, and will the evil Sampo be captured?
With wonderful writing talent, Julia Davis Adams, who was born in 1900, just 16 years before the story takes place, tells a story that has just enough history to make it historical and just enough legends to make it fantasy. For ages 11 to 16.
