5.0 out of 5 stars Review of "Vale Callampa" (sorry for my english...), January 2, 2003

The chilean band "Los Tres" (something like The Three), was a rock band from Concepcion, Chile; which became very famous during the 90's in Chile. After release nine fantastic albums (5 original, 2 live-folk recordings, 1 live & final concert, and even and MTV unplugged), and make wonderful music, which includes romantic ballads, a bit of jazz, blues, instrumental pieces, rock and even hard rock songs, they decided to broke up at autumn 2000. It was very sad for fans (for me too!), because they really were a great band: great musicians, beauty melodies, interesting lyrics, etc., leaving a hole in the spectrum of popular music in my country.
When Cafe Tacuba came to Chile to play live their new albums(1996-1998), they make friendship with Los Tres; friendship which lasted for more time than anyone could think.
The story is this: Alvaro Henriquez (ex-vocalist of los Tres) were talkig by phone to Emmanuel Del Real (keyboards and ohter of Cafe Tacuba) some time ago, and Alvaro said: "Hello Emmanuel, how are you?... I'm just recording an album with my new banda (called "Pettinellis")", and Emmanuel answered: "Hello... well, we (Cafe Tacuba) are working in some new material... guess who composed'em"... Alvaro said: "I don't know...who?"...Emmanuel replied: "YOU!"...
Since that on, Cafe Tacuba recorded and released some few weeks ago the EP "Vale Callampa", which included four songs: "Dejate Caer" (let yourself fall), "Olor A Gas" (smell of gas), "Amor Violento" (violent love) and "Tirate" (throw yourself); all being originl songs from Los Tres.
For me, and chilean fans, it's a really honor, that a fantastic mexican band had made a tribute to Los Tres...and, finally, please try to hear this songs, and the original ones...they really are good!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great tribute/un gran tributo, November 1, 2002

They have been called anything from a post-punk mexican new age band to the new standard for wich avant garde groups will be measured, but if you want to judge cafe tacuba by their new ep i think the description that would fit them best would be amazing, from the opening number of "dejate caer" wich takes us on a roller coaster of diffrent rithims and riffs, and a very diffrent version and departure from los tres ( original singers of this song) and as a bonus has a very cool bridge prone to sampling , this takes us to the errie doo woop of "huele a gas" that has some of the most elaborate harmonies and vocalizations of any tacuba cd the third course of this amazing meal " amor violento" gives us an unreal bassline, the raspy voice of a very mature ruben and the return to the sinth-mecha-sound from the early 90's that distinguished this band, and last but not least, we have "Tirate" a straight up balad and son in a very mexican way by it self that gives a taste of what to expect from previous cd's , in all this is a very good introduction to the chilean band los tres, and a great way to rediscover the best exponent of mexican alternative music cafe tacuba

Este es un estupendo tributo al grupo chileno Los Tres. Las 4 canciones incluidas cobran nueva vida con la interpretacion de los tacubos. Lastima que no incluyeron mas canciones. Pero para muestra basta un boton.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gran HOMENAJE a Los Tres, March 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Vale Callampa (Audio CD)

There is only one thing wrong with this disc, it is not long enough! This is a mini-ep, a teaser with only 4 songs that make you play it over and over. To compensate for the brevity you will probably hit the replay button again and again."Dejate Caer" is a radio radio number that has the now familiar sound of Cafe Tacuba that is about as catchy as a tune can be; you'll want to hear it over and over."Olor a Gas" has a Beatlesque sound that sways with a sound that incorporates textures that fuse vocals and background vocal harmonies to perfection as the driving basses of Quique Ranjel thump away to the inderlying keyboards. "Violento" features the quirky vocalese of what's-his latest-moniker Gallo Gasss(yes three s's) who has to be one one of the most unique voices in music. He makes David Bryne seem deadpan. The song rocks with the unmistakeable ranting and posturing vocals that writh and wind it's way into your heart. The closing number "Tirate" features a nice blend of synth work that bears the trademark of producer Gustavo Santaolla. This coupling of Santaolla, the producer to the soundtrack "Amores Perros," is a marriage made in heaven. The already classic and definitive alt-Mexican-rokeros are just sounding better and better. The Tacubistas are the edge by which all other alt bands should be judged; these guys are the best at what they do. This disc will probably make you break out their other releases or if you don't have them buy them.Recomended for those in the know who can be pacified with this sampling while you await their next full release.

5.0 out of 5 stars RE: PORQUE COPIAN A LOS CHILENOS, July 23, 2008
By
This review is from: Vale Callampa (Audio CD)
I saw Vale Callampa was only four tracks, and did not even notice it was a tribute to Los Tres from Chile. I listened to the tracks probably twice, and I came to one conclusion - my perfect band existed, and it was Café Tacvba.

From start to finish, these four tracks are just ridiculously great. From Dejate Caer, which became the bands first big-time hit since La Ingrata (at least here in the US) to Olor a Gas (their interpretation of it just gives me goosebumps) to Amor Violento (the farting sounds, though some critics think are lame, are anything but) to Tirate (probably the only track that even remotely resembles what Los Tres did in the original interpretations). This EP is really, really good, especially when you consider that the Tacvbos probably assembled this really quickly only to appease their record label because they were taking longer than expected to release Cuatro Caminos.

Café Tacvba do not copy Chilenos. No one, and I mean NO ONE, has Ruben Albarran's voice or the band's imagination. Los Tres never reached what Café Tacvba made on their debut album, Café Tacvba, let alone what they have made in the 16 years since. If you enjoy music, getting these four tracks on your repertoire of songs would be a really wise choice. Highly, HIGHLY recommend it.

And for my Chilenian buddy who gave this album one star and thus ruined Café Tacvba's reign of 5 star albums, like J-Hova said, "you get only one bar - ..."

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Triumph, December 30, 2002
This review is from: Vale Callampa (Audio CD)
With Vale Callampa, Cafe Tacuba once again delivers, as we have come to expect no less of them. All four tunes were worth the wait. Although not originally their own compositions, Cafe Tacuba takes four tunes of Los Tres and successfully transforms them into something new from Tacubalandia.
But I have to admit a little disappointment. After their prolific EP "Re", with its bountiful twenty songs, I've gotten a little spoiled and wished there could have been more tunes included, especially a few originals. But, on the up side, I feel the boys did the right thing by equitably pricing the disc. I look forward to their next project.
