An Amiable Guide to an Exciting "New" Wine Region,

This review is from: Valencia Land of Wine (Paperback)
I confess to having downloaded this lovely little book just because it had "Valencia" in the title. I've traveled the East Coast of Spain enough to be intrigued by its history and culture. Martin's book has plenty of that -- detailed stories about historical figures and regional geography -- but what it really gave me was a primer on a whole class of wines I had previously barely understood. He's passionate about the innovative ways Valencians are making affordable yet premium wines out of Moscatel, Macabeo and Bobal, varietals that I frankly used to avoid out of ignorance but now seek out.Being a collection of newspaper columns, the book is a light read. But Martin still makes room for gratuitously charming literary references (he loves James Joyce). A bottle of Bobal, a freshly baked "coca" flatbread and this book would make a very fine afternoon indeed. |
