PreSchool-Grade 3-- Mother Fox is the most unflappable parent imaginable as her cubs help her prepare a family surprise for Valentine's Day, and make a frighful mess. Zandy directs his sibs in making a pound cake (recipe included). The little foxes mistakenly guess that v stands for vinegar (really vanilla), but they luckily decide to omit it and use a little more sugar instead. The next near-disaster occurs when their Valentine for Papa gets lost and it seems that he will be home before they can find it. Of course, everything works out well, and on the last page readers will be delighted to see the Valentine foxes at their table enjoying a "light and extra sweet and absolutely wonderful--even without the vinegar" cake. A foxy red-brown wash gives the illustrations the warmth of a Valentine card. Zandy, Pandy, Poot, and Little Dilly are charming cubs. The layout has been carefully done, with good-sized type and generous white borders, so that beginning readers, as well as lap sitters, can enjoy this story. Children are sure to ask what other holidays the foxes celebrate, and with luck there will be more books to come. --Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, VA
