Hopkins' collection of seasonal poems in the An I Can Read Book^B series comprises well-chosen, easy-to-memorize entries by prominent children's poets that bypass sappy romance to emphasize universal holiday rituals. Marilyn Singer's "Heart Art" describes getting "littered with glitter" while making cards; other poems feature valentines sent to such unconventional recipients as a school crossing guard or, as in Peggy Robbins Janousky's sly contribution, a pet dog ("I'm writing a love note to Leo / I'm gluing on bangles and beads / I know that he'd love every word that I write / If only my Leo could read"). Reminiscent of the work of G. Brian Karas, Adinolfi's primitive-style illustrations are noteworthy, capturing the reigning humor while incorporating the holiday's requisite hearts and flowers in unexpected ways. It's easy to imagine these gems enlivening poem-a-day assignments, appearing as inscribed messages in homemade valentines, or inspiring young cupids to pen their own silly or loving odes.
