Princess Mia is on her way to board a private jet so she can spend the summer in the country she will one day rule - Genovia - when she discovers that she can't find her precious journal. Upon searching for it, she stumbles upon the very first journal she ever kept, the one that recounts exactly how she spent her first Valentine's Day with Michael. And so we are brought back to when the two lovebirds first began dating. Mia is ecstatic that she finally has someone to spend the day of love with, but when she realizes that Michael is quite indifferent regarding the holiday, she feels as if her romantic plans are ruined. Suddenly, it becomes clear to her that she won't be receiving a simulated ruby encrusted necklace from Kay's Jewelers, or be taken out to a fancy restaurant, for a romantic candlelit dinner. No, it has finally become clear that Valentine's Day is not meant to be special this year. That is, until Kenny comes through with a Whitman's Sampler, sending Michael into a jealous funk, and giving him a reason to appreciate the wonderful Mia. But with Valentine's Day so close, Mia begins to wonder whether Michael will actually come through as her knight in shining armor, or if she'll be spending the night at Tina Hakim Baba's place watching old Audrey Hepburn films, and filling up on junk food.

Over the years, I feel as if I have grown up with Mia. She has been by my side since I was a mere ninth grader - such as herself - and has gone through tumultuous relationships, and other teenage problems right alongside me. Which is why VALENTINE PRINCESS is sure to leave an impact on die-hard PRINCESS DIARIES fans. Meg Cabot has, once again, confronted a subject that female readers will have no problem identifying with: being alone on Valentine's Day.

Mia is on her way to Genovia when she discovers a time travel ticket (well, actually her old journal) that takes her back to her very first Valentine's Day with Michael. What a find!

The first entry is for February 11th and tells how Mia met her grandmother's astrologist, Dr. Steve. Dr. Steve predicts grave danger plus a marriage proposal for Grandmere while Mia secretly scoffs. Mia doesn't believe it, yet she fears hearing her own forecast. Dr. Steve is insistent on telling it to her anyway. Mia is sure that Dr. Steve's predictions are foolishness; however, she is dismayed to hear him foretell that she will have a caboting relationship with a Leo. Mia screams that he can only be wrong since her beloved Michael is a Capricorn, and even suspects that Grandmere has put Dr. Steve up to his predictions simply because Grandmere doesn't like Michael.

When Mia mentions the forecast to her friend, Tina Hakim Baba, Tina urges Mia to fight for Michael. She's horrified that Mia and Michael have made no Valentine's Day plans and says that Dr. Steve's prediction will come true for sure if Mia doesn't plan the perfect romantic celebration.

When Mia casually brings up the holiday of romance with her best friend Lilly in front of Michael, she's dismayed to hear both of them diss it as a crass commercial ritual that they refuse to take part in. Tina insists that Mia must change Michael's mind about Valentine's Day by making it wonderful for him. The pressure is on, and Mia is in a quandary. How can she give a gift to someone without making it seem like she wants one in return? And how on earth can she give a Valentine's Day present to someone who hates the holiday?

Meanwhile, Grandmere is spending too much time with Dr. Steve. Mia is worried. Is Dr.

Valentine Princess is hilarious. Mia is freaking out because it's her first Valentine's Day as a couple with Michael, and she wants to do something special, but Michael isn't a fan of the "holiday," since he sees it as a way for companies to exploit money out of people. When reading the series, I opted to skip the companion books and read them later. I'm so glad I did that. It's been a couple of years since I finished the series, and having Mia back in my life is wondrous.

This was a short book, but I laughed throughout the entire thing, and I couldn't put it down. Meg Cabot proves how funny she is by throwing in some ironic statements by Mia that are supposed to prove how much she and Michael are meant for each other. Remember, although this was published in 2006, it's supposed to take place roughly around 2002. So she has some hilarious lines about Michael being the Brad to her Jennifer, and other references to "made-for-each-other" couples that turned out to be not exactly made for each other.

Definitely a must-read for all Princess Diaries fans. Although, consider waiting to read this until you're either finished with the series or in publication order (after Book 7), because Meg throws in a few references that you won't get unless you're at Book 7. And trust me, it is so much funnier that way.
