This review is from: Valentino Dances, music of Dominick Argento (Audio CD)
One tends to discard contemporary composers who are, for one reason or another, not standing in the limelight. Dominick Argento, born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1927 is a prominent opera composer in the United States, but he is not very well known in Europe. The Valentino Dances are somewhat reminiscent to De Falla, spiced up with a bit Stravinksy. Surprising is the use of the accordion in this impressive piece of music. For a full appreciation of his music, listen to A Ring of Time, a four-piece suite, which to my humble opinion is a masterpiece. The sound quality of this Reference Recording is stunning as usual, although the human voice tends to be a bit remote and hollow. The full dynamics of the orchestra are best heard on excellent Hi-fi equipment.
