Does Not Fit All "Standard" Bars,
By MoneyMan (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Valeo Standard Spring Collars (Sports)
I have two different "standard-size" barbell bars: the spin lock, and a bar bought as part of a set from Modells several years ago. These collars fit the spin lock barbell and dumbbell bars beautifully and prevent the weights from moving to any large degree (but they've been tested at 100lbs. limit). However the collars are way too large for the other "Modell's" barbell set bar.
I don't dispute that these collars are standard-size collars, but I've discovered that not all bars are standard-size bars. Buyers should be mindful of that before they make their purchase, and measure their bar's diameter to make sure it's 1" thick before purchasing the collars. If the bar is, these collars are fantastic for the price.

Measure your bar diameter first,

I thought I had what was considered a standard spin lock dumbell bar. It is about 1" diameter, but slightly less. The spring collar is exactly 1", so it is too loose. If you are ordering this item, I recommend getting an exact measurement of your bar diameter first.
Now I want to order new 1" bars so I can use spring collars, but it is difficult to tell which bars on Amazon these would fit exactly.

"Fits all standard bars" can too easily lead you to believe they fit all 1" bars.
Well, no. Of 8 bars we own, these fit about 4. The spin nuts interchange on all 8 bars, the only way to tell the bars apart is try these collars and find out which ones they fit. Difference not apparent to the naked eye - all our bars are called 1" bars - your mileage may vary. A list of what bars do and don't work would be nice. That said, they're cheap and durable - try your luck if you dare.

These didn't even fit my standard bar. It's exactly 1 inch and I could barely get the springs on. I recommend not buying these

Do Not Purchase -- They Don't Fit "Standard" Weight Bars,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Valeo Standard Spring Collars (Sports)
I have a standard "standard" bar weight set that I bought at a high-end sports/weights retailer. These clips are *way* too loose to hold the weights on the "standard" bar that the weight set uses. They just slide on and off the bar without gripping *at all*. Total waste of money. They're not worth sending back, and they're not worth anything here, so in the trash they go. I should have listened to the earlier reviewer who gave the same warning. Let's send a message to the vendor: Simply refuse to buy this item. The clips that I just bought for $[...] at the local [...] store work just fine.

The ratings had me nervous, so I tried just one pair to start. It holds very tight on my bars, which are exactly 1 inch. It seems like if the bar was a little too big or a little too small you could use some pressure to make these things fit... but I didn't have to find out the hard way, so I don't know that for sure. I'm going to buy a second pair, since it fit my bars. As long as you get the super-saver shipping, I think it's a good deal... would cost $5 just to ship from any other vendor.

Smaller than other 1" grips,

These are too small for all of my standard bars, both dumbbells and barbells. Even though these bars are all slightly different, and I bought them in various states and even countries, my other grips fit all of them. These by Valeo, however, are too small. I was so sure these were the same brand of grips I ordered in the past that I recycled the packaging before trying them and now I can't even return them! Only have myself to blame for that, but so many people have said they don't fit their standard bars that I can't help but think something isn't right here. Would love to know what brands of bars people have found that these fit on since now I have otherwise useless grips that I'm stuck with.

Won't fit MOST standard sized bars. I have a home gym with standard 1" attachments that I needed this for... doesn't fit. I even measured to ensure before ordering, but this springs are so tight that with all my strength I can get them open just barely enough to get over the end of the bar, but no further so it's still not securing the weight.
Tried them on my standard straight bar. no luck. So basically if you have a bootleg "not quite standard" bar somewhere these might fit. But if you have almost any standard or 1" piece of exercise equipment built by any brand it probably isn't gonna happen. Too bad. But at least they were cheap. Now to return them...

These collars did not stay on the bar when weighted down. Dangerous to use if you are bench pressing or using heavy weights. It was a waste of money.

Solid steel bars are crazy expensive! And standard spin-locks take WAAAY too long to change plates on a 6' bar.
I found an easy, INEXPENSIVE solution- these 1" clips allow me to do my exercises where I use less than 170 lbs. IN PLATES, (I loaded the bar pictured with 140 Lbs., for wide grip bent rows- no problem, it's still straight) by combining them with 1" electrical tubing that is cheap and sturdy enough to hold that kind of weight without bending if done correctly- the key is to set the plates at the edge of your grip. See the images and notes that I provided. Go to Lowe's or Home depot and get 1" conduit, it's less than 4 bucks for 10 feet-(I actually found the bar pictured in the trash- which inspired me to try this) make sure to take the clips into the store to see if they fit correctly- since these clips vary in size from reading other reviews. Cut it down to fit your bench press for your wife or kid to use, then take the leftover piece for an extra curl bar, or to do bent rows, or even cut into 2 dumbbell handles, there is no limit to what you can do with the tubing and 2 of these clips. If you are really adventurous you could make your own EZ- CURL bar for less than 10 bucks if you have a buddy who will loan you a pipe bender. Don't use these for heavy bench presses - I never use collars on my Olympic bar at all- just learn to keep your bar parallel with the ground and you'll be fine. BX |
