Very creative mind went into these compositions.
Gary Manuel
Not every single song, and more so "Masques" than "Valerian" but what you can say to criticize and album that has 3 perfect songs on it ... so I am happy for that.
BruceK
He did exactly the same in his first album and credit Saisse for pionering the idea.

I first had this masterpeice in cassette, which I would play in my car on long drives over and over without ever tiring of it.
I consider it to be Mr. Saisse's best work.
So dramatic and moving and never fails to move me.
Took forever to find it on CD ... went to store after store for years... then finally decided to look for it online... even here it took a while... .but I got it... it came to me, scratched in a cracked case but I'm still happy to have it!
Play it on a rainy or passionate day and you will keep it forever in your car's player.
Thank you Philippe for your beautiful work!

I first about Saisse when he played with Al DiMeola. You can heard him at Splendido Hotel and Tour de Force Live from the guitarrist. So I was a bit curious about his album solo.
I bought the LP and the inner notes by Saisse catch my attention. He said this wasn't a new age album. I can't beleive when I listen to it. There were very good melodies and playing, but the album was record live. How? There were synths and piano at same time. Is this some kind of joke? No. Saisse recorded the synths parts to a computer and later play live at piano with the computer and the others musicians. This idea (18 years old now) catch the attention of others musicians, like Alex Saba. He did exactly the same in his first album and credit Saisse for pionering the idea.

ps: his others album are also great but this stands as the most inovative.

My favorites on this album are "Chihuahua Pearl", "God Son Paris" and "Ma Muse".

What I like about these three songs on this album and most of the song on the "Masques" album is that Phillippe Saisse seems to take jazz out of the boring blah doldrums and punches it up with some rhythm and complexity. Both of these albums, "Valerian" and "Masques" are really inspired and fantatic. Not every single song, and more so "Masques" than "Valerian" but what you can say to criticize and album that has 3 perfect songs on it ... so I am happy for that. I find Saisse's music here to be unique in Jazz, and unique in all music, I don't hear music like this very often, something that breaks the mold and weds the sophistication and complexity of Jazz with the rhythm and punch of instrumental rock or fusion. The result is that Saisse has earned world class credit for creating some classic music. The songs I like on both these albums are some of my favorite songs anywhere, and to me they seem timeless.

What I do not understand is why these are the only two albums like this in his repertoire. I have bought some other of his albums and to me these are the two that not only stand out but the others to be are just not what I find I like to listen to. They are not bad, just they are not as outstanding and exceptional as "Valerian" and "Masques". This guy is capable of creating some amazing music and carving out his own style, and it must be hard, so I am looking forward and hoping to see more like these two in the future.

Heartily recommend this really to anyone, not just the jazz fan, this style spans styles and blazes a new trail, I just love it, which there was more. 5/5.

I've owned this recording for many years, and I still enjoy it whenever I play it. I'm a big fan of Philippe Saisse and own most of his recording, but this one's my favorite.
