"Stunning new talent!"...
Andrew Neiderman, author of The Devil's Advocate

BOOK TWO OF THE NIGHTENGALE LEGACY OF SIN AND BETRAYAL

Years ago, in Valerie Nightengale’s extravagant Nightengale Manor, the stage was set for secrets, secrets that she did not want anyone to discover. Not even her son. Now, because the sins of the fathers linger still, there are secrets everywhere. Deadly secrets!

They linger in the deep and silent shadows in the corners of the foreboding Nightengale Manor. They haunt the little house down the hill where once upon a time unspeakable sins of the flesh were committed. Now, thanks to Valerie Nightengale and her hypocritical teachings, they haunt the very grounds surrounding the small dwelling!

So even more secrets must be planted by the guilty to confound the innocent, to cover the trails of forbidden, wicked lust, and bitter family betrayal. But worst of all, for the son of Valerie Nightengale and Jack Preston, Jon Preston, terrible secrets must be planted to obscure the tracks of betrayal and even the tracks of... murder!

From Valerie's Secrets...

I watched, curiously detached, as a woman appeared to me out of nowhere as if in a dream. She invaded the constant blackness that surrounded me in a blaze of bright light, in a sure coming of glory. The woman was costumed in a long, flowing, habit-like costume that was made entirely of white; she appeared as a nun except she wore nothing on her head. Only her dark, flowing hair offered any real kind of contrast to her brilliant, white outfit. The beautiful, billowing garment enfolded her slight frame and no other part of her was exposed to me except for her face and her hands. Together, they seemed to float independently of the rest of her white attire. In time, I realized that she was my mother. Her name was Valerie Nightengale. I knew that much about her. I could remember my mother’s name and I remembered that she had a different last name than my own. Momma, I remembered. I called the woman Momma.

Momma appeared to me in this light of sudden brightness out of the darkness all around me; it had to be a dream. It was as if Momma was an angel of mercy on a holy, life-saving mission. Yet for some reason I could not yet identify, I knew that my mother was no angel, she was anything but an angel. I instinctively knew to fear that this dream would soon turn into a nightmare.

Momma’s strange and solemn yet familiar face was bright and beautiful, it shone with a mother’s natural strong and protective love for me, her son. Yet, at the same time, her face was threatening-looking, it was dark, brooding, fearful. That face that I knew so well glowed with a frightening sort of self-satisfaction; somewhere, deep inside of my memory, I was able to recall that my mother was always self-satisfied for one reason or another. But that was not apparent to me now. My mother thought she was special, Momma thought she was something else. Her half-smile for some reason almost resembled a frown; the corners of Momma’s mouth were twisted both up and down at the same time in a sadistic grimace. Despite the vivid whiteness around me, despite the glowing, glorious beauty that emanated from everywhere around her, Valerie Nightengale was also very frightening in every way imaginable. In fact, she radiated ebony shadows.

Ebony shadows of black. Ebony shadows of shame. Shame she felt, I sensed, that was a shame for me and for everyone else in her life.

In the best-selling tradition of the most famous gothic authors...

About the Author

Justin Dwayne Foxworth has written an entire series around the Nightengale Legacy Of Sin And Betrayal. Book One is Valerie. Book Two is Valerie’s Secrets. Book Three is Valerie’s Sinners. Book Four is Valerie’s Freaks. Book Five (How It All Begins) is Valerie’s Family. Book Six (How It All Ends) is Valerie’s Legacy. The next book will be Millie’s Melancholy. The surprise apoplectic finale novella is Dorothy’s Prophecy.

His stand alone novels are Black Swan Doppelganger and Black Swan Vampire! Thank you for buying them. He lives in Traverse City, Michigan, and loves to pimp out old Lincoln Town Cars.

Justin Dwayne Foxworth has many more ideas now that the Nightengale Legacy of Sin and Betrayal is nearing completion. Watch for new stand-alone novels. Perhaps after that there will be a brand new series with some brand new despicable characters. And you gotta love those wacky, wacky characters despite their evil that often turns out to be deadly. And often turns out to be comedy as well!?

5.0 out of 5 stars This family is nuts!, June 3, 2011
The second book of the Nightengale legacy is told from her son's point of view, who has been locked up for a two month period for having a sexual relationship with what turned out to be his half sister and she does not approve of it... and yet she is having a relationship with her gardener who is half her age. Sick and twisted but I love it!!!

The first book in this series was an unpleasant one - and it had nothing to do with the incest and violence in there. I'm fine with (entirely fictional) tales of shocking sordidness, but the writing is simply awful. In the previous novel, we were introduced to Valerie Nightengale, a character that we initially assume we should feel sorry for because of what her parents did to her (including a horrible birthday present) However, the plot here was extremely poorly handled. To write a good 'shock story' you must also make it believable and give the characters some credibility. Here, none is given.

Valerie is a vain woman, and her experiences in her childhood have not humbled her or given her any love or empathy or others. She is a downright unlikeable character - you just couldn't feel bad or sorry for her at all despite the abuse her parents put her through (including a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE 13th birthday present from Daddy in the form of rape)

The events in this book and the first are just so contrived as to be nonsensical and over the top. I simply could not take the story seriously. At all.

If you couldn't stand Valerie in the first book, you certainly won't like her in this one. Her character is just downright abominable - and it's not even the kind of 'love to hate' villain. There are no redeeming qualities about her and it seems as if she actually enjoyed what her parents did to her and the very, very, VERY screwed up person she becomes. There is no self-examination by Valerie or any of the other characters, so they come across as cardboard and comical - in a sad way.

It's as if this series is meant to be a parody of the Gothic genre - except that it fails in this way as well. Valerie tries to cover up secrets with MORE secrets to the point it just gets ridiculous.

If you like good stories featuring incest and secrets, check out the 'Flowers in the Attic' series by V.C. Andrews or the 'Wideacre' series by Philippa Gregory.

4.0 out of 5 stars It keeps getting better!, August 27, 2009

This second in the series grabbed me quite quickly and it was very hard to put down. I really enjoyed this character (Jon [Nightengale] Preston, son of Valerie Nightengale and Jack Preston from the first book [Valerie]); and I was also very intrigued by him. This story had my own imagination reeling!! Just received the third book of the series [Valerie's Winter of Sinners] and I'm looking forward to getting started on it and seeing where this ones takes me!! I expect it will be pretty darn interesting!! My, my... what a family!!
