Great for enthusiasts of Viking mythology and 19th century poetry,
By Victor von Mendelbaum "Mendelbaum!Mendelbaum!" (San Diego, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Valhalla: The Myths of Norseland (Paperback)
I just found this book and as an enthusiast of norse mythology I really enjoyed Ms. Clinton-Jone's poetry. It's classic nineteenth century rhyming verse, but really captures the viceral spirit of the heroic-gods of the old norse (i.e. there's much bloody hewing and ale drinking). While it's not actual "period" poetry, which I had hoped it would be (much of which is found in Snorri Sturlasson's prodigious work preserving the voice of his culture in the 12th century), she definitely has her ear tuned to channel the long dead voice of the vikings. It's not useful from a historical perspective, but the book is a great addition to anyone's library already crammed full of more traditional norse sagas.
