With this volume about American women's participation in Vietnam, both overseas and at home, Zeinert continues her historical review of women in military conflict, which includes Those Remarkable Women of the American Revolution (1996) and Those Courageous Women of the Civil War (1998). Her highly readable, well-organized text begins with a comprehensive overview of the conflict itself, including the social and political climate at home--the civil rights movement and the changing role of women. Subsequent chapters focus on women in the armed forces, medical workers, volunteers, media correspondents, and the women who led U.S. protest efforts. The test is supported by well-integrated first-person accounts, excellent photographs, and full-page spotlights on such notable women as Major General Jeanner Holm, the first woman general in the U.S. Air Force, and teen protester Mary Beth Tinker. Throughout, Zeinert maintains an evenhanded perspective on a still volatile chapter in our history; whether women participated in or protested against the war, she writes, "both positions required enormous courage." This is a very important book for all young readers studying history. It is a nice overview of the often forgotten women veterans of this war. It contains a good list of recommended further reading, as well as some photos(nothing too graphic, but definitely not giving a false idea of the conditions in Vietnam during the war). After reading this book, I was pleased to discover that some of the women's stories mentioned in this book, for example Maureen Nerli (USO) are also in the book A Piece of My Heart by Keith Walker, which I also recently read. Definitely a good choice for history teachers in elementary schools.
