I am so happy with this tiny gadget! My doctor had advised me to use a light box for circadian rythm sleep disorder and sleep onset insomnia, which can be treated with a light box as for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I got 2 different light boxes, but ultimately gave up on them due to all of the usage requirements (early morning exposure, proper angle and distance from eyes, etc.). I took Ambien for years, to get to sleep at a reasonable hour. And I've been to a sleep clinic, getting cognitive behavioral therapy that was supposed to help me develop better sleep habits.

The Valkee works so much better for me than all of the above. Using the Valkee in the morning helps me get up and get going, with the kind of energy and good mood I'd normally only have in the evening. It also makes it easier for me to fall asleep at night. Unlike a light box, I can use this with my eyes closed -- a huge bonus for someone who is exhausted in the morning.

The treatment cycle is set to 12 minutes long (much shorter than light box treatments, which usually are more like 30 minutes). You are supposed to be able to adjust the length of the cycle through myvalkee.com, though I haven't bothered to do that yet. And you can experiment with time of day and length of treatment.

A couple of caveats: the multilingual booklet enclosed with the unit gives only bare bones information, and no AC adapter is provided for the USB charging cable. Fortunately, not much info is needed to get going. You just plug the charging cable into a USB port on a powered-up computer, charge until the blinking indicator light changes from red to green, then fit one of several included rubber tips over the ear plugs, fit the plugs firmly your ears, and press the on button for a single cycle.

I have been using this device for about two weeks. I feel a nice warmth in my ear canals while it is on. I have experienced an increase in energy, and more sustained energy throughout the day since I started using it. I now have the stamina to complete projects around the house I have been "meaning to get to" for years, and feel energetic enough at the end of the day to do a second workout with my husband. This was not the case before the Valkee. It is May now, so I will be interested to see if my increased energy lasts as the days grow short. For now, I am very pleased. I should also note that I have experienced no disruption of sleep at night since I began using the Valkee. If anything, I think my increased activity makes me sleep a little better at night.

I have suffered from major S.A.D. (and general periodic depression as well, but worse in winter) for the last several years, have hated the holidays, have been miserable even with antidepressants and a light box (though that did help a lot but is a bit inconvenient and hard on the eyes). This little gadget has been a true Godsend, it has "cured what ails me." It's so wonderful to get through the dark winter months like a normal person, actually BETTER than normal, very light, joyful, unburdened, energetic, HAPPY! Christmas was wonderful in every way, like it's "supposed" to be, and I'm doing great. I started it around mid- to end-of-October this year, I believe. I urge others to try it. My husband, a notorious non-believer in many of my little "out-there" cures, has asked if he can start using it too, as he's noticed such a profound effect it has had on me. And as it only takes 12 minutes per day, it's easy to share. And, it's good for jet lag as well.

I have suffered from Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD) for years. I have used a bright light for the eyes for years, but it takes a lot of time and isn't as effective as the Valkee. In just 12 minutes, I can feel the chemicals in my brain changing to make me happy. I now have more energy and have been feeling great. I didn't realize how depressed I have been until I experienced these changes. I do a session first thing when I wake up and it is like having my brain recharged. Later in the day if I feel like napping, I can do another 12 minute session and then I no longer want to take a nap.
In the fall and winter months I also crave carbohydrates a lot. Since using the Valkee, my carbo cravings have gone away as well. What a wonderful invention.
