Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In the picturesque Ozark mountains, a local group of residents plan to fight the sale of an abandoned farm to a mining quarry known for caring more for money than potential damage to the environment. When widow Carrie McCrite discovers the body of the group's leader, JoAnne Harrington, the valley is abuzz with theories that JoAnne was accidentally shot by hunters or murdered by the owner of the proposed quarry. For Carrie, whose husband died in a hunting accident and whose faith was the only thing that sustained her, JoAnne's death resurrects old nightmares. The romantic interest of a retired detective named Henry King raises further questions as Carrie discovers ties between Henry and JoAnne that have been kept secret for almost 30 years. With flair, Nehring, an award-winning Arkansas writer, launches a cozy series that will appeal to mystery readers and fans of Lorie Ham (The Trouble with Tenors) and Ellen Edwards Kennedy (Irregardless of Murder). For both Christian fiction and mystery collections.

More About the Author

You can begin writing whenever you want . . . as long as you don't do it for the money! More write for satisfaction and enjoyment than for money, especially these days. My own writing career (non-fiction) began when I was old enough to join AARP, and didn't expand into fiction writing for a number of years after that. Yes, a journalism and feature writing career was satisfying, it was great to see my work in print and know others were reading what I had researched and shared. But then I thought, hmmm, I love reading mysteries, could I write one?

Turned out I could, and fiction writing then turned out to be the most fun of all. I don't outline my novels, and, while I'm creating the continuing adventures of Carrie McCrite and Henry King, I can enjoy their unfolding adventures at the same time they are pouring out from their life experiences--and mine.

I firmly believe those who have been here on earth for a spell have a wealth of observations and ideas to draw on for their writing. And, the longer we live, the more of this wealth we have to share. As for research necessary to write about Carrie and Henry's adventures? Well, who could ask for more fun? Friendships made with "research assistants" at each location are a huge plus that I hadn't expected at start-up. Friendships with readers, met in person and on the Internet, are another valued plus.

My second career as a writer has turned out to be "To Die For!" (Used in the positive sense, of course) and it's something everyone can enjoy along with me as they read my novels. So, welcome to the adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars A smoothly written novel that grips the reader's attention, July 8, 2002
This review is from: A Valley to Die For (Something to Die for Series, #1) (Paperback)
After her husband Amos McCrite dies in a hunting accident, Carrie decides to realize their mutual dream of retiring to a home in the Ozark mountains. There she hopes to prove herself to be a capable woman who can take care of her self. Carrie meets her new neighbor JoAnne Harrington -- a very independently minded woman in her own right. When a stone quarry threatens to turn part of the valley into little more than heaps of gravel, the two women and their neighbors band together to prevent it. That's when someone murders JoAnne. Carrie feels compelled to uncover and bring to justice whoever is responsible. That's when another of her new neighbors, retired Kansas City Police Major Henry King, warns her that she, and not JoAnne, might have been the killer's real target. And that's when Carrie will find out in earnest whether or not she's truly a capable woman who can survive. A Valley To Die For is a smoothly written novel that grips the reader's attention from first page to last, and documents Radine Trees Nehring as a mystery writer whose imagination and talent will win her a large and dedicated readership.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely!, October 29, 2007
This review is from: A Valley to Die For (Something to Die for Series, #1) (Paperback)
Sometimes we forget just how lovely it can be to discover a new character. Radine Trees Nehring has written a character that has touched my heart. I read A VALLEY TO DIE FOR yesterday and just
smiled when I finished 'cause I know there are several more books in this series for me to enjoy and savor every word. I fell in love with Carrie Culpeper McCrite on page two when I read the following:

"She began to turn slowly, still looking up into the tree tops. She was, she decided, performing a symbolic ritual - turning away from asphalt, traffic, lined-up buildings, and rushing people."

Carrie spoke the feelings I had when we moved to Boone from Atlanta ten years ago and for the rest of the book she continued speaking my feelings for me in a way I'd never be capable.

Ms. Nehring has written one of the loveliest books I've read in a long time. I would not call this a cozy, but a traditional mystery. The sense of place in the lovely Ozarks is, in my opinion, as well crafted as
any I've ever read. As are the characters. I cannot say enough about this book to do it as proudly as it deserves. Y'all - do yourselves a huge favor, and give Ms. Nehring and Carrie a try, if you haven't
already.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Valley to Die For, April 5, 2008

A Valley to Die For
Radine Trees Nehring

Carrie has a home in the Ozark Mountains. Her husband has recently died and Carrie has met some nice friends in her new retirement area. JoAnne is Carrie's best friend, a real spitfire. JoAnne ends up murdered and Carrie wants to investigate to find the killer. However, some of the suspects are rather close to home. Carrie is a good amateur detective. There are good secondary characters. My favorite was Fat Cat. Fat Cat was JoAnne's cat, which Carrie ends up with after JoAnne's murder.

There were some good twists and turns in this mystery. The killer was not obvious to the readers. There were enough characters to care about but not enough to become confusing. Fat Cat provided comic relief.
