Gr. 5-8. When Billy and Shawn win scuba gear, Billy is convinced they will discover sunken treasure in the Gulf of Mexico. A dolphin leads them to something more exciting--an underwater station where aliens are cultivating trees for replanting on their own planet. Making friends with an alien their own age, the boys become aware of the danger Earth faces from misuse and pollution. Meanwhile, another boy tells them about mysterious happenings on a nearby island. The three boys team up and eventually discover that toxic wastes are being dumped in the gulf. They report this, and it's brought to a stop about the time the underwater arboretum is shut down and the aliens depart. Shawn and Billy giggle and wink so often that the reader forms a picture of two cretins with facial tics. But the plot is fast paced, and any book that has aliens, sunken treasure, a friendly dolphin, dangerous polluters, mutant eels, and interplantary space vehicles needs only a brief booktalk to be a hit with middle-graders. Well, Mr. Heintze was my 6th grade science teacher (I'm now in 7th grade)and he's an awesome writer. I only read this one but it was REALLY good. I definitely recommend it. I'd describe it at a mystery kinda thing. B/c the kids kept having to get out of the water for their air tanks, it kept you reading to find out what happens next. (:
