This review is from: Valleys Of The Shadow: Memoir Confederate Captain Reuben G Clark (Voices of the Civil War) (Hardcover)
If you would like to know more about what the Civil War was really like and less about the opinions of a modern person, a good way is to read a first person account. You will at least have the personal story of a person from that period and know things from his perspective. The book does not seem to glorify or demonize the participants, but rather shows some good and some bad as is typical of real people. I enjoyed the read as it gives me an eye witness perspective of typical events as experienced by some of my relatives.

Interesting, Capt. Clark was in the same unit as my Great grandfather. (I wonder if they were friends?) Puts the CW into a first person prespective. If you are a history buff, give this a read. Stories from my great grand father's military experience were not passed down through the family, with this book I was able to see a little of what he may have experienced. The official records don't give a personal first person account like Capt. Clark's work does.
