Product Description

An excellent choice for exotic hardwood decks, siding, railings and outdoor furniture. Contains a precise, unique blend of superb grade linseed oil for maximum penetration, long oil alkyds for durability and pure South American tung oil for color depth and water repellency, Australian Timber Oil delivers 3 way oil protection. This technology is a proven translucent oil treatment for mahogany, teak, and other premium exotic wood surfaces used for decks, siding, railings, and outdoor furniture. Austrailian Timber Oil penetrates deep into the dense, resin rich woods to accentuate natural wood depth and patina. In addition, complex translucent iron oxide pigments are added to ensure a lasting UV absorbing surface rich with color and dimension. Dries to a flat, translucent toned finish. Application: Optimal results can be obtained by using a pure lambswool applicator, although a high quality, natural bristle brush also yields excellent results. When spraying Cabot Australian immediately backbrush after each section is coated to ensure proper penetration. Precaution: Apply 1 coat only. Do not over apply. Coverage: On smooth surfaces, approximately 400 sq. ft. to 600 sq. ft. per gallon or 250 sq. ft. to 350 sq. ft. per gallon on rough surfaces. Banned in OTC, LADCO, and California. Refer to SKU 795715 for VOC compliant gallon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for hard woods, April 6, 2010
My deck needed resealed. I powerwashed, stripped and sanded the deck to get it ready. After tons of research, I decided on Australian Timber Oil in Natural. I was applying it on Pressure treated lumber. The directions and research stated it worked fine on pressure treated lumber. I wanted a very natural pine or natural type color - fairly clear. This product stated it was translucent and natural color. It showed a pine color. BEWARE! Once applied, it actually came out dark brown. Australian Timber Oil is really meant for hard woods only. Soft woods absorb too much too quickly - that's why a natural pine color ended up being a dark brown color, and I barely applied any of the stain (so over-application was not the issue.) Since the wood was not new, it also went on blotchy. I found a great site on deck refinishing that actually argues that the wood should be sealed before applying a colored stain in order for it not to come out blotchy. I think most of the time that's good advice - most certainly if you are using Australian Timber Oil on soft wood.

They should have a warning in the directions that if applied to soft woods, the color will be dark.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrific on Hardwoods, September 6, 2011

This review is from: Valspar 140.0003460.007 Cabot Australian Timber Oil (Misc.)
I own Jensen Jarrah patio furniture, which is made from Jarrah wood. JJ stopped importing their Colorguard, and so I called and asked what I should use. They recommended this product. It's a one coat application.

My bench didn't take the stain evenly, though the product was freshly sanded. It dried a dark, almost black finish and didn't take the stain evenly. Cabot says this is a one coat application, and I say it SUCKS. Worst product I have used. I do not recommend this at all. I give it an F, and Jarrah is Australian Timber. I cannot imagine anyone getting a good result with this product that would compare with their advertised photos...no way, no how...at least not with Jarrah wood.
