2.0 out of 5 stars Only for hard woods, April 6, 2010
My deck needed resealed. I powerwashed, stripped and sanded the deck to get it ready. After tons of research, I decided on Australian Timber Oil in Natural. I was applying it on Pressure treated lumber. The directions and research stated it worked fine on pressure treated lumber. I wanted a very natural pine or natural type color - fairly clear. This product stated it was translucent and natural color. It showed a pine color. BEWARE! Once applied, it actually came out dark brown. Australian Timber Oil is really meant for hard woods only. Soft woods absorb too much too quickly - that's why a natural pine color ended up being a dark brown color, and I barely applied any of the stain (so over-application was not the issue.) Since the wood was not new, it also went on blotchy. I found a great site on deck refinishing that actually argues that the wood should be sealed before applying a colored stain in order for it not to come out blotchy. I think most of the time that's good advice - most certainly if you are using Australian Timber Oil on soft wood.

They should have a warning in the directions that if applied to soft woods, the color will be dark.

I own Jensen Jarrah patio furniture, which is made from Jarrah wood. JJ stopped importing their Colorguard, and so I called and asked what I should use. They recommended this product. It's a one coat application.

My bench didn't take the stain evenly, though the product was freshly sanded. It dried a dark, almost black finish and didn't take the stain evenly. Cabot says this is a one coat application, and I say it SUCKS. Worst product I have used. I do not recommend this at all. I give it an F, and Jarrah is Australian Timber. I cannot imagine anyone getting a good result with this product that would compare with their advertised photos...no way, no how...at least not with Jarrah wood.
